\"\"<\/a>Ah, the blues. There are generally two kinds; the slick, middle-aged, carpet slippers variety, and the real deal. If you have a passing acquaintance with Damaged Goods records, you will know that Billy Childish, in all his various guises, is one of Britain\u2019s most prolific musicians. You will also know that he is the real deal. As far as it is possible for an artist to be the real deal; he is all too aware of the dichotomy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While I am a fan, I am nowhere near owning his back catalogue. It is simply immense. Any given year, blink, and you\u2019ll miss several of his albums. This, the third album by The Chatham Singers, is \u201cless country, no poetry\u201d and full of primal, dirty blues riffs. Simple, to the point of cave-dwelling, as is the production. Perfect.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The trio of Billy, Julie and Wolf are joined here by Jim Riley; a harmonica player of no small talent. The twelve songs, originals and covers, are like hearing the nascent, blues hungry Stones first practices in a scout hall, minus the glossy sheen. Yes, this is skeletal blues from the deeply odd Medway delta.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2018The Good Times Are Killing Me\u2019, and Slim Harpo\u2019s \u2018Got Love If You Want It\u2019 put the harmonica to good use, the guitar taking a back seat. \u2018Ranscombe Farm Boogie\u2019 evokes a rhythm of \u2018Shake Your Hips\u2019. There is a stark version of his classic \u2018All My Feelings Denied\u2019, and \u2018Wiley Coyote\u2019 is at \u2018Little Red Rooster\u2019 tempo.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2018Why Did I Destroy Our Love?\u2019 ups the pace, before the album\u2019s dark jewel that is \u2018My Love For You\u2019. Sinister and brooding, it stands apart from the other songs, for me. A great case of \u201cI really wish I\u2019d written that\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2018What\u2019s Wrong With Me\u2019 and \u2018You Wonder Why I\u2019m Hurting\u2019 bring it all to a swampy ending. It\u2019s safe to say I listened to far too much blues at a young age, so I\u2019m fussy now about what I\u2019ll risk listening to. Where can you go after Slim Harpo and Little Walter? But, if you\u2019re in the mood, this is the stuff.<\/p>\n
