\"\"<\/a>Minneapolis favourites Soul Asylum return with their 13th<\/sup> studio album, and their first since 2016\u2019s \u2018Change of Fortune\u2019. The new album \u2018Hurry Up and Wait\u2019 was preceded by the single \u2018If I Told You\u2019, which gave a hint that Asylum fans could expect the band to return with their trademark romanticism, with melodies as delicate as ever, flowing in the line with Pirner\u2019s vulnerable vocal delivery. While the \u2018Change of Fortune\u2019 album was a mixed bag, the new single \u2018If I Told You\u2019 was already perhaps a better song than anything from that album, up there with \u2018Misery\u2019 in terms of Soul Asylum ballads.<\/p>\n

A good omen then for the new album, which was finally released 17 April 2020. And fans won\u2019t be disappointed. Whereas \u2018Change of Fortune\u2019 was perhaps at times a little overblown and a little overproduced, \u2018Hurry Up and Wait\u2019 is more direct and earnest, following more in the footsteps of the inspiring \u2018Delayed Reaction\u2019 from 2012. The sound is instantly recognisable, but as with most later Asylum stuff, it\u2019s more explorative in its sound, demonstrating Pirner\u2019s expert song writing skills which have been present at least since the early days.<\/p>\n

The album opens with the strong riffing of the aptly named \u2018The Beginning\u2019 before the song almost immediately swings into familiar territory, full of sweet melodies and catchy hooks. Going straight into the superb \u2018If I Told You\u2019, this is the Soul Asylum that fans have come to love. This of course permeates throughout the album with songs such as \u2018Make Her Laugh\u2019, and \u2018Social Butterfly\u2019, but there is enough variety on this album though to keep it interesting at every turn. The Slade-esque stomp of \u2018Got it Pretty Good\u2019 is a fine upbeat number, whereas \u2018Dead Letter\u2019 takes a decidedly folky turn. There\u2019s also a lot of rock on this album, from the bluesy romp of \u2018Landmines\u2019 to the harder \u2018Hopped up Feelin\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n

Every song on the album is a strong as the last, and the variety is refreshing. Less polished than \u2018Change of Fortune\u2019 and more consistent than \u2018Delayed Reaction\u2019, the record is certainly the best album since \u2018The Silver Lining\u2019, and maybe even before. For Asylum fans, \u2018Hurry Up and Wait\u2019 will definitely rank alongside their best.<\/p>\n
