\"\"<\/a>Volunteering when you are 4 double Jameson\u2019s into a double-figure session down the Pub to review an album is probably not the way to do things. However, yours truly did just that with regards to Stiff Richards\u2019 \u201cState of Mind\u201d album<\/span>. Two days after my drunken endeavours the\u00a0<\/span>WeTransfer<\/span>\u00a0file arrived. \u201cPlease be good\u201d I hoped. Have you ever, from the opening notes of a record from a band you have absolutely no knowledge of, known instinctively that\u00a0<\/span>you\u2019re gonna love every single one of the songs? Again, that\u2019s what happened to yours truly. \u201cPoint of You\u201d\u00a0<\/span>kicks in with top quality jangly<\/span>\u00a0guitar before the rest of the band cotton on and let rip. Almost immediately, I was singing along, all right shouting<\/span>\u00a0along<\/span>, at the idiot box\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWhat\u2019s the point of you?!\u201d For those of you wondering why I had the Television on<\/span>\u00a0whilst listening to music, I have the subtitles\u00a0<\/span>on whilst using the home Gym,\u00a0<\/span>gotta<\/span>\u00a0burn those Jameson Calories off some<\/span>how and being annoyed at the News helps.\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s almost like the guitarist came into the rehearsal studio with a whole bunch of riffs, started playing them and the rest of the band automatically knew what was expected of them, with the bassist on \u201cGlass\u201d Peter Hooking things up in the manner of Joy Division\u2019s \u201cDance To The Radio\u201d but not.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cGot It\u00a0<\/span>To<\/span>\u00a0Go\u201d sounds like Rod Stewart and the Faces have rediscovered their swing<\/span>\u00a0or gin<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The songs are loose, tight and explosive all at the same.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The nine tracks on offer come and go in less than 30 minutes leaving me\u00a0<\/span>gasping<\/span>\u00a0for more<\/span>, t<\/span>he fast pace does easy up towards the tail end of the album allowing me to catch my breath but not<\/span>\u00a0enough that I need\u00a0<\/span>to l<\/span>ie<\/span>\u00a0down<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I resisted the temptation to discover more about Stiff Richards<\/span>\u00a0whilst writing this<\/span>\u00a0as I didn\u2019t want to be influenced or swayed by anyone or anything else.<\/span>\u00a0I did get it into my mind that they\u00a0<\/span>must be<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Australasia as the singer\u00a0<\/span>sometimes hinted at Rob Younger, either that or he was a fan of\u00a0<\/span>Radio Birdman<\/span>\u00a0and The\u00a0<\/span>New Christs<\/span>. Turns out that the band are Australian residing in Rye which is just outside of Melbourne and consist of\u00a0<\/span>Wolfgang Buckley on vocals with\u00a0<\/span>Arron<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ma<\/span>wson<\/span>\u00a0and Tim\u00a0<\/span>Garrard<\/span>\u00a0on guitars,\u00a0<\/span>Raf<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Heale<\/span>\u00a0on Bass and finally\u00a0<\/span>Lochie<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Cavigan<\/span>\u00a0on drums.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cState of Mind\u201d\u00a0<\/span>from Stiff Richards\u00a0<\/span>is available right now from the aptly titled Legless Records<\/a><\/span>. UK label Drunken Sailor Records<\/a> will also have copies available in December\/January.<\/span><\/p>\n
