\"\"<\/a>\u00a0In times like these we need bands like Reverend Peyton\u2019s Big Damn Band. This fact is not lost on the band itself, and so now here we are with their latest album \u2018Dance Songs for Hard Times\u2019. If ever music can be the cure for anything, the Rev is here to deliver.<\/p>\n

The band aren\u2019t kidding when they declare these to be dance songs. The Rev\u2019s bellowing voice (stronger here than ever before) and blues craftsmanship, backed up by the endless charm of Breezy\u2019s washboard and backing vocals, and Max\u2019s Senteney\u2019s drum rhythm, are as solid as always. This album, however, really is brimming with bluesy, party numbers.<\/p>\n

From the driving opener of \u2018Ways and Means\u2019, straight into the swinging \u2018Rattle Can\u2019, this record is crying out to be enjoyed loud. The rockabilly of \u2018Too Cool to Dance\u2019 perhaps symbolizes the carefree nature of this release more than any other song on the album \u2013 \u201cwe may not get another chance\/please don\u2019t tell me you\u2019re too cool dance.<\/em>\u201d It really is a breath of fresh air in these tough and uncertain times. It just makes me sad that we really can\u2019t get out there to dance.<\/p>\n

The record still leans heavily on its traditional influences, and songs such as \u2018No Tellin\u2019 When\u2019 carry the timeless and haunting sound that is so integral to folk & blues storytelling, whereas \u2018Come Down Angels\u2019 closes out the album with a raucous riot of gospel.<\/p>\n

Reverend Peyton\u2019s Big Damn Band is a band that just keeps improving \u2013 technically and creatively \u2013 without ever straying from the elements that make them easily one of the best blues bands of modern times. I fell in love with them upon listening to \u2018Between the Ditches\u2019 in 2012 and have rejoiced in everything they\u2019ve released since; however, listening to \u2018Dance Songs for Hard Times\u2019 comes closest to that feeling of utter joy I experienced the first time around.<\/p>\n
