AEG Presents announce that, following a much-postponed but largely sold-out tour of 2021,\u00a0The Nightingales\u00a0will again tour the UK in Spring 2022.\u00a0 Described by John Robb as \u201cThe misfits\u2019 misfits\u201d,\u00a0The Nightingales\u00a0are the subject of the documentary feature film,\u00a0\u201cKing Rocker\u201d\u00a0\u2013 written and presented by comedian\u00a0Stewart Lee, directed by\u00a0Michael Cumming\u00a0(\u2018Brass Eye\u2019, \u2018Toast Of London\u2019). The reviews were amazing: \u201cOne of my all-time favourite rock-Docs\u201d said\u00a0Mark Kermode, \u201cThe new Gold standard for rockumentaries\u201d agreed\u00a0The Scotsman. This is a band that matters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comedian Stewart Lee and director Michael Cumming (Brass Eye, Toast Of London) investigate a missing piece of punk history. Robert Lloyd, best known for fronting cult Birmingham band\u2019s The Prefects and The Nightingales, has survived under the radar for over four decades. But how, if at all, does Robert want to be remembered? The anti-rockumentary \u2018King Rocker\u2019 weaves the story of Birmingham\u2019s undervalued underdog autodidact into that of the city\u2019s forgotten public sculpture of King Kong, eschewing the celebrity interview and archive-raid approach for a free-associating bricolage of Indian food, bewildered chefs, vegetable gardening, prescription medicines, pop stardom and pop art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of the highlights from the film are here, along with rarities which won\u2019t appear on any of the deluxe reissues of the Nightingales\u2019 catalogue, among them 7\u2033 versions of \u201cUse Your Loaf\u201d, the Bob Luman hit \u201cLet\u2019s Think About Living\u201d and \u201cBlack Country\u201d, a glam remix of crowd favourite \u201cThick And Thin\u201d and a version of Christy & Emily\u2019s \u201cGhost\u201d which rivals the Nightingales\u2019 take on TLC\u2019s \u201cUnpretty\u201d for sheer beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only act with roots in the punk era that have gone on to make records more captivating, cutting and entertaining today than at any point in their past; 2022 will be a busy year for the Nightingales, with months of live dates planned, a limited edition remix 12\u2033, deluxe reissues of both \u2018Hysterics\u2019 and \u2018In The Good Old Country Way\u2019, and a hardcover book collecting Robert\u2019s lyrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birmingham\u2019s original punk group The Prefects had been part of The Clash\u2019s \u2018White Riot Tour\u2019, recorded Peel sessions, released a 45 on Rough Trade and, years after splitting had a retrospective released by Fire Records offshoot label Call Of The Void to glowing reviews.  The Nightingales was formed by a few members of The Prefects following that band\u2019s demise in 1979. Comprising an ever-fluctuating lineup, based around lyricist\/singer Robert Lloyd, they enjoyed cult status in the early \u201980s and were championed by John Peel, who said, \u201cTheir performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
