Hard-hitting rock \u2018n\u2019 roll veteran Pete Berwick has come storming into 2023 with a real no-holds-barred, punch-in-the-gut record. Despite having no previous intentions to make a new album, Berwick reportedly followed up an opportunity he simple couldn\u2019t refuse and stepped into the studio with Charlie Bonnet III (who also plays guitars here) to produce this unapologetic barnstormer and slam it right in our faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018The Damage is Done\u2019 treads quite a different road to its predecessor \u2018Island\u2019, released in 2019, and sees Berwick returning triumphantly to his harder side \u2013 and then some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the rip-roaring opener of \u2018She Ain\u2019t Got Me\u2019, it\u2019s quite clear where Berwick\u2019s focus is in making this record \u2013 it\u2019s a fast and fierce fuck you, and it\u2019s glorious. The dogged songwriter retains his witticisms and endearing self-deprecation, but it\u2019s all served here with a huge sneering slice of scorn. From the \u201cmaggots crawling on my coat\u201d in \u2018Finger Down My Throat\u2019 to the gang vocals of \u2018You\u2019ll Get Used to It\u2019 or the shotgun blast of title track \u2018The Damage is Done\u2019, the album is teeming with grit and determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two sides to Berwick\u2019s music, and of course this album is not without it\u2019s accomplished acoustic offerings in songs such as the beautifully nostalgic \u2018Timeclock on the Wall\u2019, or the sing-along of \u2018Ghost Tears\u2019, a song fit for a slow dance at any demented high-school disco. Yet it\u2019s the snarl of offerings like \u2018There You Go Again\u2019 that give the album its identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sweet version of Charlie Bonnet III\u2019s \u2018Haunted Heart\u2019 is included before \u2018Fool in Love\u2019 plays out the record in magnificently fun fashion with a groove that will lead you right back to the beginning of the album to do it all again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
