He and I have a lot of overlap, in terms of the music we like. We made a guitar-centric record that encapsulates everything I&#8217;ve been listening to over the years, from the most country songs I&#8217;ve ever recorded to punk rock and even songs that sound like a California version of The Clash.\u201d<\/em><br>\u00a0<br>\u2018Damage Control\u2019 is the track he\u2019s referencing, which strays further from the country influence than most of the album. It\u2019s also the only \u2018old\u2019 tune that Johnston and Shiflett included on\u00a0<em>Lost at Sea.<\/em><br>\u00a0<br>\u201c<em>All the other tunes were written in the months leading up to recording, but when Jaren and I were sorting out which songs to do he mentioned something about The Clash and I remembered this old one I\u2019d demoed about 15 years prior,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>recalls Shiflett<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6-1140x1140.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6-65x65.jpg 65w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/mail-6.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>\u00a0<br>With its layers of reverb, pulsing percussion and Echoplex tape delay, \u2018Damage Control\u2019 went through a number of versions before reaching its final form in the studio with Johnston<em>.<\/em><br>\u00a0<br><em>\u201cI love that the musical inspiration on this one was late-stage Clash, but we wound up layering it with banjos and what-not. Definitely takes it somewhere else. Ska-mericana?\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Shiflett laughs<em>. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing better than when influences converge taking you places you never expected.\u201d<\/em><br>\u00a0<br>Caught halfway between the honky-tonk saloon and the punk rock dive bar,\u00a0<em>Lost at Sea\u00a0<\/em>is both eclectic and electric, making room for alt-country crunch, guitar-driven grit and sharp songwriting. Tying that mix together is Shiflett himself, a musical Renaissance Man whose influences are every bit as wide-ranging as his\u00a0<em>resum\u00e9.<\/em><br>\u00a0<br>The new album also features a stellar cast of Americana all-stars. Among them are fellow guitar slingers Charlie Worsham, Tom Bukovac, and Nathan Keeterle, all three of whom laced the record with fiery fretwork.
