{"id":24533,"date":"2024-04-02T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/?p=24533"},"modified":"2024-04-01T20:49:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-01T20:49:31","slug":"tommy-hale-hideaway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/?p=24533","title":{"rendered":"Tommy Hale &#8211; &#8216;Hideaway&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tommy Hale - Hideaway (Official Video)\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/agw4O93XBy8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight years on from his critically acclaimed&nbsp;<em>Magnificent Bastard<\/em>&nbsp;album, Dallas roots-rocker Tommy Hale returns with new single, video and album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The driving &#8216;Hideaway&#8217; is the opening cut on Tommy&#8217;s forthcoming album&nbsp;<em>All At Sea<\/em>, out through Holiday Disaster Records on 12 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, the album was recorded in England, at Wiltshire\u2019s Mooncalf Studio with sometime members of London roots-rock band The Snakes (Simon George Moor, Johnny&nbsp;O&#8217;Sullivan and Dan Tilbury) along with guitarist Nick Beere, and was produced by Moor.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/thumbnail-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"746\" src=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/thumbnail-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/thumbnail-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/thumbnail-1-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/thumbnail-1-768x573.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The band started the&nbsp;recording in November 2019 and were set to begin on a Monday morning. Tommy received a call on the Sunday evening informing him that his father had had a heart attack and was not expected to live. The recording sessions were abandoned. The following spring the pandemic began. Consequently, the album carries an unavoidable sense of loss, escape and finding solace in the quiet moments that came about because of the unprecedented&nbsp;circumstances.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be easy to lazily bracket Hale\u2019s oeuvre as \u2018Americana\u2019, but there\u2019s quite a bit more going on here, with forays into power-pop, alt-rock and classic left-of-centre songwriting in the manner of, say, Randy Newman, Warren Zevon and Kevin Ayres, although Tommy would never be so bigheaded as to compare himself to any of those masters. What&nbsp;<em>is&nbsp;<\/em>certain, though, is that the clash of Texan and English cultures give them album an unique and vital energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I went into making this album wanting to interpret other people&#8217;s songs alongside mine,\u201d explains Tommy. \u201cI&#8217;ve always enjoyed hearing a great Willie Nelson song that sounds like it came straight from his soul, only to find out another songwriter wrote it. The record contains two songs from friends of mine that I wanted to see if I could interpret \u2013 \u2018Esperanza\u2019 by Tex Smith and \u2018Radio Towers\u2019 by Greg Vanderpool. These songs always stood out to me as something I wanted to dive into. I also stepped back a bit on writing lyrics and Johnny O&#8217;Sullivan stepped forward. I think it added some depth and a different perspective that I couldn&#8217;t achieve&nbsp;on my own.
