2024 has certainly been full of surprises so far. What with One The Juggler releasing a fabulous new album in \u2018Memoir Days\u2019, now it\u2019s the turn of their bassist, Jerry T Jones, to spoil us with twelve new songs. And it\u2019s no surprise that they are of equal quality, given that he wrote \u2018Talking To Ourselves\u2019 and \u2018Andy\u2019s Bar\u2019 on \u2018Memoir Days\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening song, \u2018Only Time Will Tell\u2019 crafts a beautiful tune that tries to remain optimistic in the face of climate disaster. While reminiscing about Bowie\u2019s \u2018Five Years\u2019, the sound is more in line with The Kinks, perhaps not surprising given Jerry\u2019s Kinks tribute band, The Konks. But, this is far from being a rip off; his canny use of influences is tempered by his own talent as a songwriter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Demons Fly Away\u2019 has echoes of classic Mott, and Colin Minchin\u2019s solo has touches of Ronno, which is no mean feat. \u201920 Years\u2019 describes how songs can touch us and form part of our lives, with a keyboard sound that evokes John Grant. \u2018Diamonds In The Rain\u2019 namechecks Major Tom, and again there is a Ronno moment, this time on acoustic guitar, fleeting but classy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Mood Swing\/Time Bomb\u2019 is in quirky, Cockney Rebel territory, while \u2018Back From Tomorrow\u2019 with its  slick pop stylings and barbed lyrics reminds me of The Dowling Poole. \u2018Communal Sun\u2019 starts off like Al Stewart\u2019s \u2018Year Of The Cat\u2019, but with a more melancholy storyline. \u2018She\u2019s On A Trip\u2019 is a slice of mature, summer pop, so dig out your espadrilles and enjoy. \u2018Toy Town\u2019 is a reworking of the One The Juggler song, with added sax, and \u2018Sleep Over\u2019 is a nicely woozy slice of gentle psychedelia, from sleep to new beginnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Second Skin\u2019 almost sounds like it was written for Bowie, the vocal phrasing is such that you can imagine Dame David singing it. It\u2019s a lovely tune. And, suddenly, \u2018Just One More Song (Until We Meet Again)\u2019 brings our journey to an end. Much more than the sum of it\u2019s influences, \u2018Back From Tomorrow\u2019 is the culmination of a life devoted to music and songwriting that deserves your attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
