Just a few months on from Jerry Thornton Jones\u2019 (One The Juggler) solo album \u2018Back From Tomorrow\u2019, and here we are with his first album as part of The Shambolicks. Not one to sit around, he is also a member of Kinks tribute band The Konks. And, throughout, there are threads from all these bands, as you\u2019d probably expect. Yet, as with these previous releases, the quality of the tunes is what counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From opening instrumental \u2018Theme\u2019, it\u2019s clear that things are groovy chez Shambolicks. \u2018We Gotta Go\u2019 is part sixties dance floor, part Dr Feelgood riff, with that hint of Bowie in Jerry\u2019s voice. Somehow, it works perfectly, and finishes abruptly, where \u2018Apple Charlotte\u2019 is altogether more Beatlesque, circa 1966. It\u2019s a second bite of the cherry for \u2018Only Time Will Tell\u2019, but as it\u2019s one of my favourite tunes from \u2018Back From Tomorrow\u2019, I won\u2019t complain. The Kinks styled backing vocals really suit the song. If Ray Davies released this today, he\u2019d be applauded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WeGottaGo by TheShambolicks\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3qdjzdDrMOo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018PrimeTime\u2019 has the urgent riff and melody that would equally suit One The Juggler, while \u2018Life Goes On\u2019 evokes the more reflective moments of \u2018Blue Mask\u2019 era Lou Reed. A pleasant surprise. And, suddenly, \u2018Heart Bleeds Rock n Roll\u2019 ups the tempo again, like Bowie playing Hamburg Beatles. Kudos to lead guitarist Scott Blake for getting the tone just right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the John and Paul harmonies are present and correct on \u2018Consequence Of You\u2019, a hard thing to pull off, it\u2019s really quite touching. \u2018The Ticket\u2019 has producer Jim Riley adding harmonica to the acoustic-led tune, and \u2018Reflections\u2019 once again captures that mid-60s vibe, just on the edge of psychedelia. I can picture Macca nodding appreciatively at the bass line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018No One Really Knows\u2019 ends things like a song you remember warmly from somewhere in your mind. There\u2019s no mistaking that these are lovingly crafted songs from people who care to make something special.
