There are no spoilers here at RPM, but hearing this dialogue for the first time was enough to have our head honcho, Dom Dale,y snotting his breakfast porridge out of his nose, and if it had been 1977, I dare say he would have smashed up his stereo in outrage too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the motherfuckin\u2019 Dwarves, though, brothers and sisters and a fourteen-track slice of their kind of sleazy life is just what Record Store Day 2025 needs if you ask me (the price of the bloody thing here in the UK aside that is). Yup, as a special treat for all of us vinyl nerds, Blag Dahlia and co have decided to finally unleash these previously never-before-released tracks, recorded live in the studio in Seattle, Summer 1989. This is, by the band\u2019s own admission, the missing link between the Dwarves classic 1990 Sub Pop release \u2018Blood, Guts & Pussy\u2019 <\/a>and 1988’s \u2018Toolin’ For a Warm Teabag\u2019 which had been released on Nasty Gash Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Think of \u2018Sunshine, Lollipops, & Rainbows\u2019 then as a seedy glimpse behind the band\u2019s heavily soiled cross boners backdrop curtain, as eleven of the original \u2018Blood, Guts & Pussy\u2019 tracks get a down and dirty, live in the studio, mauling. Highlights for me still include \u2018Fuck You Up And Get High\u2019, \u2018Astro Boy\u2019 (the tragic backstory behind which guitarist HeWhoCannotBeNamed<\/a> once shared with me and brought a whole new meaning to the song) as well as their wonderful reinterpretation of \u2018Surfin\u2019 Bird\u2019, here reworked\/renamed\/repurposed within the truly awesome \u2018Motherfucker\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just like their debut Sub Pop album there\u2019s no fucking around here \u2013 it\u2019s fourteen songs in the same number of minutes and only \u2018Back Seat of My Car\u2019 and \u2018Drug Store\u2019 are missing from that album\u2019s thirteen tracks. However, in their place we get \u2018Eat You To Survive\u2019, \u2018She\u2019s Dead\u2019 and \u2018Fuckhead\/Shout\u2019, the latter being similar to \u2018Motherfucker\u2019 albeit here the song morphs into The Isley Brothers classic before seemingly the tape runs out and we can all catch our breath once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sex, drugs and rock n roll is what The Dwarves were all about back in 1989, and probably still are to this very day. They are the band the PMRC (remember those fuckers?) would have loved to have cancelled back then but they effectively did that to themselves in 1993 when choosing to fake the death of HeWhoCannotBeNamed ahead of the release of their \u2018Sugarfix\u2019 record and subsequently imploded after Sub Pop didn\u2019t see the funny side of it and promptly dropped the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows\u2019 is the missing gem from the dawn of that Sub Pop era, and it finally sees the light of day on April 12th<\/sup> 2025 as part of Record Store Day.
