{"id":28367,"date":"2026-04-23T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/?p=28367"},"modified":"2026-04-22T19:15:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T18:15:16","slug":"50-years-since-nancy-spungen-introduced-the-new-heartbreakers-l-a-m-f-line-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/?p=28367","title":{"rendered":"50 years since\u00a0Nancy Spungen\u00a0introduced the new\u00a0Heartbreakers\u00a0\u2018L.A.M.F.\u2019 line-up"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>It\u2019s 50 years since&nbsp;<em>Nancy Spungen<\/em>&nbsp;introduced the new&nbsp;<em>Heartbreakers<\/em>&nbsp;\u2018L.A.M.F.\u2019 line-up \u2013 writing a full-page feature in New York Rocker.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/New-York-Rocker-4-Nancy-Spungen-review-Leee-band-pic-Heartbreakers-1976-2500px.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"744\" src=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/New-York-Rocker-4-Nancy-Spungen-review-Leee-band-pic-Heartbreakers-1976-2500px-1024x744.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/New-York-Rocker-4-Nancy-Spungen-review-Leee-band-pic-Heartbreakers-1976-2500px-1024x744.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/New-York-Rocker-4-Nancy-Spungen-review-Leee-band-pic-Heartbreakers-1976-2500px-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/New-York-Rocker-4-Nancy-Spungen-review-Leee-band-pic-Heartbreakers-1976-2500px-768x558.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/New-York-Rocker-4-Nancy-Spungen-review-Leee-band-pic-Heartbreakers-1976-2500px-1536x1116.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/New-York-Rocker-4-Nancy-Spungen-review-Leee-band-pic-Heartbreakers-1976-2500px-2048x1488.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/New-York-Rocker-4-Nancy-Spungen-review-Leee-band-pic-Heartbreakers-1976-2500px-1140x829.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Nancy Spungen will forever be remembered for her fatal connection with Sid Vicious.&nbsp;&nbsp;But prior to landing in the UK, she was a mover in the similarly burgeoning NYC punk scene.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1976 Richard Hell left&nbsp;<strong>the Heartbreakers<\/strong>&nbsp;after disputes about the number of songs each of the three leads should sing.&nbsp;&nbsp;The solution was two-fold \u2013 a new pro bassist,&nbsp;<strong>Billy Rath<\/strong>, who\u2019d honed his skills in various New Jersey bands, and new songs from&nbsp;<strong>Johnny Thunders<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Walter Lure<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Jerry Nolan<\/strong>&nbsp;to replace Hell\u2019s contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new line-up had a deadline, a gig at Max\u2019s Kansas City on July 23<sup>rd<\/sup>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nancy\u2019s feature (attached) is based around that event, and the songs she described were the ones later to become the&nbsp;<strong><em>\u2018L.A.M.F.\u2019<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;album.&nbsp;&nbsp;Shortly after, manager&nbsp;<strong>Leee Black Childers<\/strong>&nbsp;received the phone call from&nbsp;<strong>Malcolm McLaren<\/strong>&nbsp;inviting them to the UK\u2019s \u2018Anarchy Tour\u2019 with a band they knew nothing of \u2013 the&nbsp;<strong>Sex Pistols<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;On the same day they arrive in London, the Pistols did their interview with Bill Grundy &#8230; and suddenly the tour was front page news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nancy followed the Heartbreakers to London, arriving on March 15<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;as they were preparing to play the Speakeasy (recorded and released as \u2018D.T.K\u2019).&nbsp;&nbsp;However the band think she\u2019s bad news; when she gets let into the flat they\u2019re staying in they hide from her.&nbsp;&nbsp;Soon she is ejected, then rejected by Johnny Rotten and ends up with Sid, who quickly contracts hepatitis. (more info:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sidviciouslives.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.sidviciouslives.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2018L.A.M.F.\u2019<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;has had a chequered life.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was not until 44 years later that a clean master was found in co-producer Daniel Secunda\u2019s attic.&nbsp;&nbsp;The original release was criticised for sounding muddy; a mastering fault.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the chaotic Track Records collapsed, manager Leee burgled the offices for the tapes, but he only found multitudes of mixing sessions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Secunda had left Track, sore at being unpaid and sidelined.&nbsp;&nbsp;Outtake mixes and remixes made up subsequent reissue versions of the album.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/FREUDLP101Y_cover_LP-700px.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/FREUDLP101Y_cover_LP-700px.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/FREUDLP101Y_cover_LP-700px.jpg 700w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/FREUDLP101Y_cover_LP-700px-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2018L.A.M.F. \u2013 the found masters\u2019<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;was first issued in 2021 as a pandemic Record Store Day release and the following year elevated to a \u2018RSD Essentials\u2019 neon pink pressing.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now to coincide with the&nbsp;<strong>50<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary<\/strong>&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<strong><em>L.A.M.F.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;lineup coming together in New York City, it\u2019s being reissued in a&nbsp;transparent vinyl&nbsp;version.
