History, politics, punk and finding friends with whom to\u00a0\u2018drink pints and play instruments\u2019<\/em>,\u00a0Manchester<\/strong>-based four-piece\u00a0GETNER\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>reputation has long since taken to the road prior to the release of their debut single,\u00a0Motorman<\/em><\/strong>. Addressing a lost British squaddie on the streets of Derry, Strabane, Omagh or Belfast during an intense period of The Troubles, the track is the first recorded work from the determinedly\u00a0non-English<\/em>\u00a0band made up of a punchline-baiting line-up of two charming Derry hoodlums, a\u00a0Lancashireman\u00a0<\/strong>and a\u00a0Yorkshire<\/strong>\u00a0\u00e9migr\u00e9.

\u201cOur songs are steeped in the history of Ireland, in particularly volatile times, that we heard stories, read about, seen the aftermath and passed down trauma surrounding it as we grew up,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>says Derry-raised singer and songwriter, Quentin Wylie. \u201c<\/strong>We hope that the songs help shed some light on events and experiences that, for the most part, people don\u2019t know about.\u201d<\/em>

Operation Motorman<\/em>\u00a0took place on Mon 31 July 1972 as 22,000 British troops were engaged in reclaiming \u2018no go\u2019 areas in Northern Ireland\u2019s cities and large towns. Their deployment included the neighbourhoods of Derry, Wylie and drummer\/vocalist,\u00a0Ruairi Coyle\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>home city. It\u2019s a place they recognise as being of\u00a0\u201cfamily but division, close-knit community but small-town mentality and a strong sense of cultural identity that’s plagued by its own history,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>but also\u00a0\u201cthe land of saints, scholars and the fucking Undertones.\u201d<\/em>

Choosing Manchester as a new home, a city they recognise not only for its deep historic links to Ireland, but also noting it\u2019s insatiable race to open as many Irish bars as possible in the present day, GETNER was completed by\u00a0Charles Barber\u00a0<\/strong>(guitar) and\u00a0Will Milton\u00a0<\/strong>(bass) through the combined circumstances of exchanging style notes on Instagram and hanging out in\u00a0\u201cRuairi\u2019s grotty flat\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
