Addressing a lost British squaddie on the streets of Derry, Strabane, Omagh or Belfast during an intense period of The Troubles, the track is the first recorded work from the determinedly\u00a0<em>non-English<\/em>\u00a0band made up of a punchline-baiting line-up of two charming Derry hoodlums, a\u00a0<strong>Lancashireman\u00a0<\/strong>and a\u00a0<strong>Yorkshire<\/strong>\u00a0\u00e9migr\u00e9.<br>\u00a0<br><em>\u201cOur songs are steeped in the history of Ireland, in particularly volatile times, that we heard stories, read about, seen the aftermath and passed down trauma surrounding it as we grew up,\u201d\u00a0<\/em><strong>says Derry-raised singer and songwriter, Quentin Wylie. \u201c<\/strong><em>We hope that the songs help shed some light on events and experiences that, for the most part, people don\u2019t know about.\u201d<\/em><br>\u00a0<br><em>Operation Motorman<\/em>\u00a0took place on Mon 31 July 1972 as 22,000 British troops were engaged in reclaiming \u2018no go\u2019 areas in Northern Ireland\u2019s cities and large towns. Their deployment included the neighbourhoods of Derry, Wylie and drummer\/vocalist,\u00a0<strong>Ruairi Coyle\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>home city. It\u2019s a place they recognise as being of\u00a0<em>\u201cfamily but division, close-knit community but small-town mentality and a strong sense of cultural identity that&#8217;s plagued by its own history,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>but also\u00a0<em>\u201cthe land of saints, scholars and the fucking Undertones.\u201d<\/em><br>\u00a0<br>Choosing Manchester as a new home, a city they recognise not only for its deep historic links to Ireland, but also noting it\u2019s insatiable race to open as many Irish bars as possible in the present day, GETNER was completed by\u00a0<strong>Charles Barber\u00a0<\/strong>(guitar) and\u00a0<strong>Will Milton\u00a0<\/strong>(bass) through the combined circumstances of exchanging style notes on Instagram and hanging out in\u00a0<em>\u201cRuairi\u2019s grotty flat\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GETNER - Motorman (Official Video)\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9ce0fyPms4U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lyrically of&nbsp;<strong>Grian Chatten, Alex Turner<\/strong>&nbsp;and<strong>&nbsp;Bob Dylan<\/strong>&nbsp;and musically of&nbsp;<strong>IDLES, Gurriers&nbsp;<\/strong>or<strong>&nbsp;Viagra Boys,&nbsp;<\/strong>the overflowing plate completed by a serving of&nbsp;<strong>MF Doom,<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Frank Zappa<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Captain Beefheart<\/strong>, the band\u2019s documentarian intellect (Quentin being a former student of Irish History) is poured over an on-stage devotion for&nbsp;<em>\u201cthe love of a groove\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;and high energy performance. A jumble footage of bombings, funerals, marches and military presence depicts the chaos on the streets at a time of overbearing tension.<br>\u00a0<br><em>\u201cIf we were from Senegal or Vietnam, it might just be very similar scenes as you\u2019re seeing here, but probably with better weather,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Quentin. While Ruairi says:\u00a0<em>\u201cIrish History is something we are all still learning about. It reflects in all of our songs as we delve into it.
