Considering there are only three of them riding the crazain to the apocalypse, they make an unholy racket. Playing their brand of no-nonsense punk/metal, Midnight always put a smile on my face, and after seeing them many moons ago, a hole in my eardrum was the volume they played at, and this live album sounds like it was recorded with those faders open and the volume at the same ear-shattering levels. Imagine Motörhead jamming with Discharge or GBH, and you might be in the same ballpark as long as you imagine Bathory or Venom as lyrical inspiration. Imagine Tank and Warfare went the full hog, then you might be able to appreciate the full force that is Midnight on ‘Satanic Attack Live!’.

lust, filth and sleaze recorded in Los Angeles at two sold-out shows as part of Midnight’s Satanic Royalty’ 15th Anniversary World Tour (where has all the time gone). It is mixed and mastered, although I think it’s pretty raw and unmastered. ‘Satanic Attack Live!’ captures 10 tracks off ‘Satanic Royalty’ – live and in the original album running order – plus five additional songs, including “Shock Til Blood”, “T.A.P.” and “Fucking Speed and Darkness.” for good measure.

Athenar is Midnight and, being the brains behind the whole shooting match and playing Bass and handling vocals as well, he does a sterling job, and whilst being wholly unoriginal and just carving out his own path using the previously mentioned inspirational bands from Punk and metal, he does a spot-on job, and here the energy of a Midnight show is captured. If you can’t deliver it in under forty minutes, then don’t bother. With the help of D.K. Vagslay, Iron Possessor, the noise is supreme and utterly filthy. In front of a meagre 300 believers, it takes me back to the early recordings Slayer released with boundless energy and a cheeky nod and wink this dirty fuckin racket should find its way onto every turntable of the self-respecting headbanging punk rocker. The banter is like Bad News never happened.

Black n roll sounds utterly filthy live, and this record has captured that dirty, deplorable deluge of depravity so well; just buy it and strap on that bullet belt and relive a live show in your bedroom wearing the mask obviously. It’s not overproduced or in any way shape or form glossy, but why would it. It’s like a great old school bootleg where the distortion is about to kick through your bass cone and ruin your stereo. ‘Fucking Speed And Darkness’ is a must-hear, so don’t be a wimp rocker and join the Filthy, belligerent and obnoxious and fill yer black heart with Midnight Live! Then start a punch-up in the mirror, and your listening experience is complete; whoever said it’s music to bar fight to was right; it’s brutal and like a punch to the temple. All hail Midnight and Athenar; they truly rule! Buy it!

Buy Here

Author: Dom Daley

Spat out of the flaming bowels of Hell, Midnight are a full-throttle, ear-shattering ball of energy.
