\"\"<\/a>They say the third time\u2019s the charm, and, after the breathtaking, ruthlessly efficient one-two punch of \u201cBlossom\u201d\u00a0<\/b>and \u201cModern Ruin<\/b>\u201d, here we are \u2013 at\u00a0Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes\u2019<\/b>\u00a0album number three \u2013 at once a stadium sized declaration of intent and a deeply personal cri-de-coeur called \u201cEnd of Suffering<\/b>\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n

Recorded in just six months over the heatwave that engulfed London last year, End Of Suffering – named after the Buddhist term for enlightenment- is the sound of a band entering an entirely new realm of the senses, a forty minute rock\u2019n\u2019rollercoaster of molten-hot bangers, scorched-soul ballads and grunge lullabies laced through with a lacerating lyrical honesty.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
With Cam Blackwood (George Ezra \/ Jack Savoretti) at the helm and legendary mixer Alan Moulder (Nine Inch Nails \/ Queens Of The Stone Age) sprinkling sonic stardust, the resultant album sees Carter, co-songwriter\u00a0Dean Richardson<\/b>\u00a0and co not so much spreading their wings as running and leaping headfirst into heretofore uncharted waters. Opener \u2018Why A Butterfly Can\u2019t Love A Spider\u2019\u00a0<\/b>finds Frank at full stretch, singing: \u201cWhen I\u2019m high I\u2019m in heaven\/When I\u2019m low I\u2019m in hell<\/i>\u201d, while the first single \u201cCrowbar<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u201d is tauter than a highwire and relentlessly sharpened to a razor\u2019s edge, a sonic Molotov cocktail of a track delivered with the anarchic zeal of the gilets-Jaunes rioters.\u00a0\u201cI saw an amazing bit of graffiti during the Paris riots which\u00a0said: \u2018We\u2019ve cut off heads for less than this\u2019<\/i>\u201d enthuses Frank.\u00a0\u201cI loved that attitude. People are sick of being force-fed doom and gloom<\/i>.\u201d It also comes complete with a video directed by long-time collaborator\u00a0Ross Cairns<\/b>\u00a0(who has also directed videos for Biffy Clyro and QOTSA) and acts as a blistering clarion call to arms.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

When the fury is dialed down, however, even more, startling shades start to surface. \u2018Anxiety<\/b>\u2019 is a paranoic festival anthem in waiting, while \u2018Love Games\u2019<\/b>\u00a0is an absolute beauty; a distortion-heavy nod to Amy Winehouse\u2019s finest moment destined to soundtrack the summer.\u00a0\u00a0 \u2018Angel Wings\u2019<\/b>, meanwhile, is as bleakly poetic as Charles Bukowski. A howl of existential despair involving vodka and Vicodin induced visions of \u00a0\u2018feathers made of diamond rings\/dragons made of oxygen\u2019\u00a0<\/i>it\u2019s worthy of those other harrowingly honest third albums, The Manic Street Preachers\u2019 Holy Bible\u00a0& Nirvana\u2019s In Utero (both band favourites).<\/span><\/div>\n

The album also features\u00a0Tom Morello<\/b>\u00a0as a guest guitarist on \u2018Tyrant Lizard King\u2019.<\/b>\u00a0The two re-connected after many years at Resurrection Festival in Spain last summer,\u00a0where Frank\u00a0infamously sang Rage\u00a0classic\u00a0\u2018Killing In The Name\u2019 to a 40,000 strong crowd, finishing the track with a stage dive worthy of the rock\u2019n\u2019roll\u00a0hall of fame.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

Indeed. In an age of say-nothing pop and codified corporate rock,\u00a0End Of Suffering<\/b>\u00a0does what all great music should- lift the spirits and stir the soul.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
