{"id":3421,"date":"2019-01-21T05:00:54","date_gmt":"2019-01-21T05:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/?p=3421"},"modified":"2019-01-19T13:42:36","modified_gmt":"2019-01-19T13:42:36","slug":"gene-loves-jezebel-cauda-pavonis-the-fleece-bristol-17-01-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/?p=3421","title":{"rendered":"Gene Loves Jezebel \/ Cauda Pavonis &#8211; The Fleece Bristol 17\/01\/19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/download-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3423 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/download-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/download-5.jpg 311w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/download-5-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/a>As I enter The Fleece on a grim Thursday night the support band have just taken the stage and local band\u00a0<a class=\"_64-f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CaudaPavonisOfficial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cauda Pavonis<\/a>\u00a0might not be everyone&#8217;s\u00a0cup of tea with their steampunk full goth schtick which was as unavoidable as the backing tapes and recorded synths but some people in attendance\u00a0were getting into it as the set wore on.\u00a0 Frontwoman Su was a likable and engaging singer but the music was not really to my taste although I do remember a couple of titles in &#8216;Aces And Eights&#8217; and &#8216;Love Like Broken Glass&#8217; and I do remember them singing\u00a0 about nurseries and other goth things but I wasn&#8217;t really here for that I did get distracted by the fleeces video screens either side of the venue displaying the countless tribute bands currently boggin&#8217; up (or maybe propping up ) venues like this and I remember feeling quite sad about it as the Goths played on and maybe I should take more of an interest in them because at least they weren&#8217;t peddling someone else&#8217;s music and all power to them for what they do as it must be a serious niche scene.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122621.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3432 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122621-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122621-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122621-65x65.jpg 65w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122135.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3429 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122135-205x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122135-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122135-768x1121.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122135-701x1024.jpg 701w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190119_122135-1140x1664.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a>Anyway onto the headliners Gene Loves Jezebel who are covering six UK cities on their first jaunt in a decade featuring Pete Rizzo, James Stevenson, and Jay Aston. You know when you get a feeling that this is going to be good well as soon as Stevenson hit the strings to unleash &#8216;Twenty Killer Hurts&#8217; it wasn&#8217;t all best of material and you could never accuse Gene Loves Jezebel of hopping on the nostalgia circuit because it certainly didn&#8217;t feel like that nor did the band perform like they were just going through the motions.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190117_220000.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3426 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190117_220000-e1547904721901-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190117_220000-e1547904721901-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190117_220000-e1547904721901-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190117_220000-e1547904721901-1140x1520.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Cow&#8217; was dedicated to Vegans in the audience and to be fair when Jay asked how many were in attendance\u00a0you could have heard a pin drop (Bristol keeping it old school). &#8216;Sweet Sweet Rain&#8217; was dedicated to Jay&#8217;s motherland just across the border and &#8216;Kiss Of Life&#8217;s&#8217; &#8216;Why Can&#8217;t I&#8217; was majestic.<\/p>\n<p>The last studio album featuring these three had &#8216;Someone You Love&#8217; and &#8216;Flying&#8217; represented and they transitioned seamlessly into the middle of the set. there were plenty of crowd pleasers yet to play and the clock was ticking I did start to think if we&#8217;d manage to cram in so many songs I wanted to hear.\u00a0 It was a dip into the archives for &#8216;Bruises&#8217; of the first album which had me thinking how long ago that was and to be fair to Jay he&#8217;s certainly got the peter pan thing happening as he&#8217;s managed to stay\u00a0 rock n roll pencil thin and like his heroes he dances and jokes with the audience and is on good form tonight sharing stories about the songs as they come thick\u00a0and fast. &#8216;Gorgeous&#8217;, &#8216;Jealous&#8217;, &#8216;Break The Chains&#8217; were all aired before Jay introduced the first song off the first album and one that had the powers that be had read or listened to the lyrics would unquestionably have banned it &#8216;Upstairs&#8217; sounded fresh and vibrant like it could have been recently written never mind recorded in nineteen eighty-three!
