A dreamlike lyric that seems to hold the cosmos in its hands. It\u2019s still the most recognisable, covered and widely beloved song in the catalogue of a band that\u2019s released a remarkable 26 albums. And it\u2019s 30 years old this year. The song is \u2018Under The Milky Way\u2019, from The Church\u2019s most successful album, the undisputed classic \u2018<em>Starfish\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the Australian paisley underground pioneers are still enjoying the unique celebrations, which started with a sold-out appearance at the Meltdown Festival in London on the personal invitation of curator, The Cure\u2019s Robert Smith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They return to British shores with the following tour dates in order to mark another remarkable anniversary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sat 8th\/Sun 9th June &#8211; \u2018Of Seance and Starfish\u2019 &#8211; The Church Weekend, Bush Hall,\u00a0<strong>London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mon 10th June &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Manchester\u00a0<\/strong>Club Academy<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tues 11th June &#8211; La Belle Angele,\u00a0<strong>Edinburgh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these shows, \u2018<em>Starfish\u2019<\/em>\u00a0will be performed in its entirety, along with a selection of other gems from the band\u2019s career, which now spans an incredible 38 years.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pWxJEIz7sSA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Starfish<\/em>\u00a0remains best known for its iconic singles \u2018Under The Milky Way\u2019 and \u2018Reptile\u2019. But like all classic albums, it\u2019s a journey \u2013 and it starts with \u2018Destination\u2019, the six-minute opus which opens the album.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there, the list of hits, band and fan favourites is long. \u2018Myrhh\u2019, which leader Steve Kilbey described in his memoir \u2018<em>Something Quite Peculiar\u2019<\/em>\u00a0as the definitive Church song. \u2018Ripple\u2019, from the masterful \u2018<em>Priest=Aura\u2019<\/em>. Almost anything from 1982\u2019s \u2018<em>The Blurred Crusade\u2019<\/em>. Expect songs from \u2018<em>Hologram of Baal\u2019<\/em>, itself celebrating its 20<sup>th<\/sup>anniversary. And, of course, there\u2019s \u2018The Unguarded Moment\u2019, the single that launched the band onto world stages on its release in 1981.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is not just a nostalgia trip. The Church have been revitalised since 2014 with the addition of guitarist Ian Haug, formerly of another iconic Australian band, Powderfinger. \u201cIan is a big part of the band now,\u201d Fellow guitarist Peter Koppes says. \u201cHe\u2019s a consummate, intuitive musician with fantastic tones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koppes goes on to sum up the band. \u201cMusic is like inner space and we\u2019re astronauts,\u201d he says. It\u2019s a spellbinding thing, it\u2019s hypnotising. That\u2019s why people like it.
