If you though<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0fans\u00a0<\/span>of Guns \u2018n\u2019 Roses had a hard time waiting for a follow up to the \u201cLose Your Illusions\u201d albums, 17 years<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>pare a thought for\u00a0<\/span>disciples<\/span>\u00a0of Croydon\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0(2<\/span>nd<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0finest<\/span>\u00a0band<\/span>\u00a0Johnny Moped; 13 years between the<\/span>ir\u00a0<\/span>1978 debut \u201cCycledelic\u201d and it\u2019s follow up \u201cThe Search For Xerxes\u201d and then a further 25 years\u00a0<\/span>until the band\u2019s next album<\/span>,<\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s A Real Cool Baby\u201d<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0hit the real and virtual Record Shops in 2016<\/span>. Splitting the difference Johnny Moped weren\u2019t expected to be releasing anything new until at least 2038. That was until the band\u00a0<\/span>unleashed<\/span>\u00a0a new single in the shape and form of \u201cCatatonic\u201d\u00a0<\/span>in 2017.<\/span>\u00a0Part of the band\u2019s renewed\u00a0<\/span>activity was the passing of Johnny\u2019s legendary wife Brenda, who back in the day ruled his Social<\/span>\u00a0and Band<\/span>\u00a0Calendar with a Rolling\u00a0<\/span>P<\/span>in of iron and then in later years<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0due to her failing health<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Johnny became her\u00a0<\/span>full-time<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0main<\/span>\u00a0carer<\/span>, pretty much sidelining his quest\u00a0<\/span>to regain his<\/span>\u00a0poster boy\u00a0<\/span>crown for the\u00a0<\/span>disenfranchised \u201c80% disabled\u201d (his words not mine) Rock Star.<\/span>\u00a0Until now!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/span>arlier this the band\u00a0<\/span>decamped to Panther Studio in Reigate to hone their craft<\/span>\u00a0that would see Marty Love<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0formally of Case and currently of the Weird Things and The Sensible Gray Cells<\/span>, making his full-length studio<\/span>\u00a0debut<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0taking<\/span>\u00a0over\u00a0<\/span>drum duties\u00a0<\/span>from the down stepping Dave Berk<\/span>, joining Slimy Toad, Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Robot and\u00a0<\/span>Jacko<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Pistorious<\/span>\u00a0and of course the man himself Johnny Moped<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The result of which is\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>14<\/span>\u00a0track \u201cLurrigate Your Mind\u201d<\/span>\u00a0album<\/span>. Unlike it\u2019s predecessor all the songs\u00a0<\/span>on offer\u00a0<\/span>are new<\/span>, none<\/span>\u00a0are<\/span>\u00a0from \u201cback in the day\u201d demos that have re-recorded, apart from the b-sides to \u201cCatatonic\u201d and \u201c<\/span>Livin<\/span>\u2019 In A Dream World\u201d which were \u201cHard Lovin\u2019 Man\u201d and \u201cSave The Baby Seals\u201d respectively. Although the final track,<\/span>\u00a0that features the guitaring skills of original member Captain Sensible<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>lists all the\u00a0<\/span>pre-Moped<\/span>\u00a0band names<\/span>\u00a0\u201cBlack Witch Climax Blues Band Generic Breakdown\u201d (what no \u2018Assault & Buggery\u2019?!)<\/span>\u00a0is an obvious nod to the past<\/span>\u00a0with its autobiographical lyrics\u00a0<\/span>and with the subject matter of \u201cWhere\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Shergar<\/span>?\u201d rather on the old side<\/span>\u00a0maybe the seeds\u00a0<\/span>to some of the songs had actually been sown earlier<\/span>\u00a0in Johnny\u2019s career<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWith a cry of \u201cOkay Tomcats, let\u2019s do this\u201d on the\u00a0<\/span>alternate album version of \u201cCatatonic\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at the start of the\u00a0<\/span>record<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>we know that Johnny means business and business is<\/span>\u00a0going to be<\/span>\u00a0good.\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s been known from past Bootleg tapes that\u00a0<\/span>Johnny\u2019s colleagues<\/span>\u00a0will on the sly record\u00a0<\/span>him<\/span>\u00a0in conversation and then put\u00a0<\/span>his missive to music. This is what seems to have happened with \u201cThe Little Shop\u201d<\/span>. Johnny is either reading a shopping or a price list from his local convenience store. \u201cBeers<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>w<\/span>o for five quid\u201d all accompanied by a\u00a0<\/span>piano. The ultimate music<\/span>\u00a0for a ride in a lift that\u2019s never going to stop at your floor<\/span>. As well as Captain Sensible<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>former member\u00a0<\/span>Xerxes makes an appearance adding\u00a0<\/span>Saxonette<\/span>\u00a0on \u201c<\/span>I Feel\u00a0<\/span>Like<\/span>\u00a0I\u2019m Falling Away<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0and o<\/span>n \u201cOh Baby\u201d it\u00a0<\/span>suspicious<\/span>ly\u00a0<\/span>sounds like Johnny has phoned in his vocals, which is fortunate as he sings about wanting to swim naked with some unsuspecting Boiler in a Swimming Pool.\u00a0<\/span>Hardcore Moped fans will lap this up, casual Punk Rock fans might\u00a0<\/span>need to see Fred Burns\u2019 \u201cBasically\u2026Johnny Moped\u201d documentary before fully appreciating<\/span>\u00a0why grown men will get all teary-eyed over the Moped mega-dross sound.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
