\"\"<\/a>What could be better than a new Spunk Volcano album to help cheer us all up during this rain-drenched summer we\u2019re having here in the UK? Well, how about two Spunk Volcano albums?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right folks \u2018Double Bastard\u2019 is not only Spunk Volcano And The Eruptions fourth studio album to date but it\u2019s also a double (bastard) album.<\/p>\n

Containing twenty five tracks of pure Spunk Rock \u2018Double Bastard\u2019 flips effortlessly from punk to metal to Oi! to some good old mondo bongo rock \u2018n\u2019 roll (more of this later) whilst never once straying too far from the semi-legendary SAW (Spunk\u2019s Anthem Writing) formula we have all come to revere the masked madman for.<\/p>\n

Of course, a lot has happened in the Eruptions camp since 2017\u2019s excellent (and Ginger Wildheart endorsed) \u2018Not Wired Up Right\u2019 album, for starters they\u2019ve changed record labels, then came the shortening of their name (to S.V. And The Eruptions) after some venues refused to book them, and most recently the acquisition of both ex-FDC Joey Strange on bass and rabid Faxe drinker Scott Russell on guitar \u2013 makes this line up perhaps the band\u2019s most insanely perfect yet.<\/p>\n

\u2018Double Bastard\u2019 then is the larger than life sound of this loveable bunch of antiheroes captured in the studio, and before I delve into the nitty gritty of the album I\u2019d just like to say \u201cif there\u2019s anyone out there right now who is writing more memorable punk rock hymns dedicated to this disaffected country of ours I\u2019d certainly like you to point them in my direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Away from the constraints of Dirtbox Disco\u2019s \u201cswing your pants\u201d feelgood punk rock the darker more introverted side of Spunk Volcano has always been where I\u2019ve found some of his most interesting work and here tracks like \u2018Road Rage\u2019, \u2018You Think Your Rock N Roll But You\u2019re Not\u2019, \u2018Independent Fire\u2019 and \u2018Personality Black Hole\u2019 turn the noise levels up way past critical with the first three tunes having more than just a hint of Motorhead about them and the latter thrashing away like an in their prime Slayer.<\/p>\n

Ole Spunk chops has certainly not forgotten his punk rock roots though and tracks like the Pistols meets Sparrer riot that is \u2018Sucking Up\u2019, the whoa-oh-waddytastic \u2018TCP\u2019 \u2018and the infectious genius of \u2018Scared Of Needles\u2019 are some of the very best tunes the masked marauder and his mob of misfits have ever committed to CD.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere the dissonantly melancholic pop of \u2018Red Rings\u2019, \u201899%\u2019 and \u2018Shit Excuse\u2019 provide an almost sugar free alternative to the full on assault of their surroundings and in \u2018Old Wives Tales\u2019 you have the band\u2019s most bongo-bonkers tune to date somewhere where the true genius of what makes Spunk Volcano such an amazingly prolific songwriter is condensed into 2 minutes of 30 seconds of\u2026.well, you have to hear it for yourselves.<\/p>\n

At 25 tracks long \u2018Double Bastard\u2019 could perhaps be accused of being Spunk Volcano\u2019s very own \u2018(Ab)Use Your Illusion\u2019, however unlike those overblown pieces of GN\u2019R released stadium rock bollocks where you could have made one decent album out of the two, nothing could be further from the truth here. Although I must admit the idea of the Eruptions spunking a \u2018November Rain\u2019 sized budget on a video for the stupendously silly \u2018Sooper Dooper\u2019 (a song with one of the very best opening lines of all time) certainly wouldn\u2019t be without its charms.<\/p>\n

Released on 21st<\/sup> of June 2019 \u2018Double Bastard\u2019 is an expansive (not expensive) celebration of gloriously catchy potty-mouthed punk rock \u2018n\u2019 roll, providing the perfect pick me up to our depressing UK summer.<\/p>\n
