{"id":881,"date":"2018-10-09T05:00:34","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T05:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/?p=881"},"modified":"2018-10-09T08:04:30","modified_gmt":"2018-10-09T08:04:30","slug":"the-brutalists-the-brutalists-cleopatra-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/?p=881","title":{"rendered":"The Brutalists &#8211; The Brutalists (Cleopatra\u00a0records)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dom Daley.<\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1538468095792_3764\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1538468095792_3757\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-882 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10-1140x1140.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10-65x65.jpg 65w, https:\/\/rpmonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/a3889580589_10.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A couple of Cripps and a Mogg what could possibly go wrong?\u00a0 Well, nothing to be fair because this is one of the most pleasant surprises\u00a0I\u2019ve had musically all year.\u00a0 Mogg on the mic now who\u2019d have thought that?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Brutalists sit somewhere\u00a0between the Beat, Selector, and Wilco Johnson and his old pals in Dr. Feelgood and a whole host of other bands and musicians that spring to mind as I listened to the musical landscape of this self-titled\u00a0debut album.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sure its a new genre on me this ska pub rock but\u00a0to be fair that\u2019s\u00a0about\u00a0exactly\u00a0where it sits.\u00a0 It comfortably strokes the pub rock chin with some great lyrics and cheeky melodies and also has the happy go lucky charm of some decent ska like chops.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I Don\u2019t Believe A Word\u2019 is like a mid summers breeze from the choppy guitar riff-a-rama\u00a0through the chilled keyboard swirls but it\u2019s held together nicely by a great early door down the pub melody.\u00a0 If that was a nice surprise then the Kinks beatnik vibe on \u2018Far Away\u2019 is excellent and that nod of appreciation is turning into a smug grin that These Brutalists might be onto something here and you\u2019re in on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Form &amp; Function\u2019 is like a mid 80\u2019s dash of Jagger and at times has some Adolescent\u00a0Sex about it which is always a good thing in my book. \u2018Meet Me Half Way\u2019 is a good old knees up so crack open those jellied eels and turn up those bass bins.<\/p>\n<p>The band really hit their stride by the time \u2018Talk Of The Town\u2019 bosses proceedings you\u2019ll be bowlin\u2019 down the street with this bad boy on your headphones a right proper jack the lad anthem.\u00a0 When \u2018Know Your Value\u2019 is finished with its keyboard swirl these\u00a0guys show that they\u2019re not afraid to tread on some pop-smart\u00a0tones in pursuit\u00a0of a good tune before the happy go lucky \u2018Nutter\u2019 shows up for a bit of 70\u2019s glam slam and\u00a0like a first cousin once removed of Hanoi Rocks \u2018Boiler\u2019 if I might be so bold. Then they rock it up whilst dropping the C Bomb on \u2018You Got It\u2019 and to close off proceedings they simply turn in an immaculate bit of rock n roll like ending this bad boy with a huge exclamation\u00a0mark.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mick, Nigel, Kent, Charlie, and Robert know how good this album is and so do I \u2013 I only hope you\u2019ve got the sense to follow the links and pick up a copy for yourself you can thank me laters\u00a0me old chinas.
