<\/p>\n Expectations are high, especially with ex-Fuzztones in their ranks. Garage rock fans are, rightly, notoriously fussy. So many bands end up diluting their legacy. \u2018Bothering Me\u2019, to this end, is a good opener. Hips will shake, and there\u2019s a distinct whiff of Stiv to Leighton\u2019s vocals. Handclaps and a corking solo? But, of course.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2018We Can Get Together\u2019 wouldn\u2019t be out of place in The Sonics\u2019 set. The sound is perfect, just the right side of sleazy, tight but loose. They sound like they are loving it. The melody line is reminiscent of James Williamson. Mmm. There have to be slower tracks, and \u2018Heart Of Darkness\u2019 fits well, with its organ and backing vocals. It sways, man.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2018No One Rides For Free\u2019 gets back on that Stooges, staccato riff. You really can\u2019t sit still to this groove. \u2018Down Underground\u2019 and \u2018Time To Move\u2019 come on like garage classics. Seriously, this is a master class in how to write tunes. The thing most bands forget. This is actually the first Morlocks album of all-original material. It may have taken a while, but they\u2019ve nailed it. They\u2019re touring Europe soon; support bands, you\u2019ve got your work cut out.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2018One Foot In The Grave\u2019 is almost too close to \u2018Raw Power\u2019, but it\u2019s so fine, I can let them off. \u2018High Tide Killer\u2019 is fuzz-fuelled, with a touch of baritone from Leighton, \u2018Easy Action\u2019 starts with drums and a wail of feedback before it pounds you into the dance floor. Relentless. They end with \u2018You Don\u2019t Know\u2019; a touch of \u2018Where Have All The Good Times Gone?\u2019, before it gets far out. The phased guitars sound great on headphones.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hats off to the mixing skills of Jim Diamond of Dirtbombs. Between them, they\u2019ve created the sound that The Morlocks\u2019 songs deserve. I doubt I\u2019ll hear a better garage rock album this year.
