Seemingly untouched by the global crisis as much as any passing trend, Billy Childish continues to swell his catalogue at an amazing rate. After CTMF’s ‘Last Punk Standing’, comes the first of four albums by his latest project, The William Loveday Intention. Yes; four albums, already in the can. Joined by James Taylor and Dave Tattersall, “People Think…” has the flavour of a western-themed record. The Medway Delta is augmented by tales from the saddle, while Billy’s voice remains firmly in the Kent marshlands.

The production is lush, as befits the ‘widescreen’ feel of most of the songs here. Violins and mariachi trumpets enhance songs like ‘My Love For You’, which has the richness of The Urban Voodoo Machine, while ‘Again And Again’ and ‘This Wondrous Day’ reminds me of Dan Sartain’s recent ‘Blue Prairie’ album, though I imagine that Billy has cast an influence on them already.

The richer sound suits the songs and the cinematic feel throughout, but there are still the Lo-Fi elements you’d expect; the insistent, monotone keyboard riff of the title track, which manages to name check Kylie Minogue, and the fiddle led lament of ‘The Bitter Cup’.

I’m guessing that it’s Julie singing on ‘You’re The One I Idolise’, though I don’t have all the details to hand. A sweet song that echoes some slower T Rex tunes. Then there’s the skeletal blues riff of ‘My Father Was A Railroad Man’, one of the oldest riffs, that John Lee Hooker must have heard as a child.

This is an interesting side-step from Billy, and bears repeated listens. What the next three albums will bring, only he knows, but this is very promising.

Graham Day and his compadres Wolf Howard and Allan Crockford have been part of the fabric of British garage rock for decades now. Yet, unless you’re a fan of the Medway sound via Billy Childish, you probably haven’t heard of them. You’ve been missing out, but fear not! This reissue with three extra tracks is an ideal starting point.

From The Prisoners to The Senior Service, Day has quietly been carving a career in quality tunes, be they of a garage, mod or psychedelic flavour. You can rely on him to come up with the goods. Put simply, he’s as good as Weller thinks he is.

From the opening title track, it doesn’t disappoint. ‘Mary’ has the immediacy of Steve Marriott fronting The Who, especially with the fluid bass line. ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind’ brings out the wah-wah and flailing drums, while ‘I Am The Fisherman’ has a melody and harmonies worthy of The Flamin’ Groovies.

‘Sitar Spangled Banner’ is one of Day’s favoured instrumentals, complete with Hammond. Of the extras, ‘Love Me Lies’ sees Graham flex his fingers, some far out solos, as does Hendrix cover ‘Freedom’, an equally groovy hip-shaker, and ’30-60-90’ is another instrumental which The Fuzztones and The Morlocks should be fighting over.

Most tracks are live, with vocals recorded in one take, and all the better for it. If you love your garage rock, this is the perfect introduction to Graham Day’s back catalogue. While gigs are rare, on 26th May, The Forefathers play Margate Mod and 60s Festival.

The Billy Childish Story 1977-2018

Punk Rock Ist Nicht Tot – 2CD/3LP – (Release date 24/5/19)

41 Years of Childish!   Career-spanning compilation!

Triple Gatefold Vinyl!  Double gatefold CD

Sleevenotes by Stewart Lee!

How did Billy come to be? Holed away in the distant inter tidal marshland of mid-Seventies Kent, breaking rocks in the hot sun as a teenage dockland stonemason, undiagnosed dyslexia and general insubordination denying him the educational path he might have taken, Childish took the punk gospel Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols preached in 1976 as revealed scriptural truth.

Forty-two years later Childish is the last man standing, the most enduring, uncorrupted and prolific of the class of ‘77. And some heroic fool has now tried to sum him up in a mere forty-eight songs, from the thousand or so he has recorded.

This compilation provides tiny tasters of each of Childish’s phases, and some snippets of short-lived side-projects too. Administered correctly, it will make an addict of you. You have been warned. Here’s a field guide to the many faces of Billy Childish.

Damaged Goods are also very excited to announce the release date of the new JOHNNY MOPED album…

It’s called ‘LURRIGATE YOUR MIND’ and it’s on LP/CD/Digital and it’s out on the 24th May 2019

Time flies! It’s three years since the band’s last album, It’s A Real Cool Baby, but the band have been busy in the meantime. Following the amicable departure of founding member Dave Berk, they welcomed Marty Love as their new drummer.

Since then the band have had successful tours of the UK, Germany, Holland and Scandinavia. They’ve had prestigious slots at Blackpool’s famous Rebellion Festival, recorded two radio sessions for Marc Riley’s BBC 6Music Show, and played a storming set at Damaged Goods 30th Anniversary show at London’s Koko last September. Plus they played with longtime friends, The Damned on their 2018 tour and finished the year with a headline Christmas show at The Lexington.

A biography of the band is currently being written. More details to follow on that nearer to publication date. There’s even talk of gigs in the US and Japan in the not too distant future. Fingers crossed eh!

So what can we tell you about the new LP? Well, it has 14 tracks including recently sold out single ‘Catatonic’. There’s a guest appearance from Captain Sensible, a longtime friend and Ex-moped of course and the now found Xerxes. It was recorded at Panther Studios, Reigate and produced by longtime associate Dick Crippen.
