‘Backhand Deals’, the debut album from Cardiff based indie power pop sensations Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard made waves amongst those in the know back in 2022. With an image straight out of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon circa ‘77 and an album choc-a-bloc with radio-friendly singles such as ‘New Age Millennial Magic’ and ‘Good Day’, they channelled the pomp and circumstance of Queen, the guitar-driven glam rock of T Rex and the quirky songwriting magic of Jellyfish. How could they fail?

Fast forward 2 years and the band’s sophomore long player ‘Skinwalker’ sees singer and main songwriter Tom Reese take his band in a different direction than anyone could have expected.

In the lead-up to this album’s release, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard opted to tour playing none of their older songs. Apart from the recent singles, it was all unfamiliar songs. A very brave or a very stupid move depending on your perspective. Turns out that there’s a newfound intensity to Tom’s songwriting and these songs sounded fresh, vital and cool as fuck in a live environment. I snapped up a copy of the tour exclusive ‘blood splatter’ vinyl from the merch stand without hesitation, as soon as the band finished playing.

‘Skinwalker’ is a rollercoaster ride through the mind of Tom Reese as he comes to terms with depression, anxiety and a trip into therapy. As well as the metaphorical nods to the shifts in the band such as the album title and the Blair Witch styled cover art, there are the physical ones. Gone are the stripey jumpers and the quirky haircuts, the singer has shaved his head, wears Black Sabbath t-shirts and has penned a set of tunes that seem to be a reaction to the definite power pop of the debut.

The trademark layered vocals are still omnipresent, but the music is a gargantuan alt-rock, fuzzy monster. The album opens with a doomy, heavy metal chord that will make you jump and reach for the volume button before we glide into the first single ‘National Rust’, a Talking Heads-inspired alt-rock ditty, full of glorious bass and drums. Next, the Sabbathy fuzz of ‘Chew’, with its rising dance beat and lush harmonies takes over.

The brilliantly titled ‘My Starsign Is A Bassett Hound’ is next level. It was a standout live track for me and showcased not only great songwriting dynamics but also what an outstanding drummer they have. It verges on prog rock, and I mean that in a good way. Layers of Queen-like vocal harmonies cry out over stabs of rhythmic beats and furious, fuzzy guitars, it sounds massive.

The ghost of Silver Sun rears its golden skin on the fuzz-drenched ‘Sugar Sandwich’. With its sublime “sugar, sugar, sugar” refrain, it’s an earworm that remains after multiple listens. And when we flip the record over ‘Leather Bound’ has much the same impact. 

We delve deeper into Tom’s headfuck with ‘Therapy’, a six-minute plus dark and macabre alt-rock dance tune that rides on a throbbing bass groove and comes on like Viagra Boys for the win.

Epic closer ‘Night Of The Skinwalker’ is a full-on 70’s glam rock throwback, like Freddie Mercury and Richard O’Brien directing a Black Midi opus. As theatrical as it is guitar-driven, it feels like a hellish journey through one man’s headfuck as we come out the other side intact following a massive crescendo of noise.

Changing your sound, and your image and discarding your back catalogue is a brave move for any band no matter the stature, and ‘Skinwalker’ is a literal shedding of the skin of one of Wales’ finest musical exports in recent years.

If you witnessed them live recently, you know how good these tunes come across, and what a beast of a band they have become. If you are one of the few diehards that flicked ‘em two fingers and walked away because they didn’t play the old stuff, then more fool you!

Once this album has worn in and the dust has settled, it could turn out to be Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard’s ‘The Holy Bible’ or Tom Reese’s ‘The Wall’. And whether they do play the old stuff again in future, or implode after 12 months is anyone’s guess, but at least I can say I was there when they changed their world.

new album “Skinwalker” + EU headline tour dates announced for April 2024

New album out 12th April via Communion Records

Cardiff-based four-piece Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard return with the announcement of their highly anticipated second album “Skinwalker”. Following closely on the heels of their critically acclaimed single “Therapy”, which came out just before the turn of the year, the new album is due for release on 12th April via Communion Records. It will come shortly after the band’s forthcoming UK tour which is set to take place across March 2024.

Following on from their Welsh Music Prize nominated debut album ‘Backhand Deals’ in 2022, the band wrote and recorded the album at frontman and producer Tom Rees’s Rat Trap studio, the room where Rees has previously recorded and produced tracks for emerging talent – Panic Shack, Do Nothing and The Bug Club. The material – as previewed on “Therapy” and their earlier single “Chew” – showcases a heavier and more disquieting sound than anything the band have released to date.

This darker sound and aesthetic take inspiration from found-footage horror and the Navajo concept of the Skinwalker – a legendary malevolent shapeshifter – from which the album takes its name. Thematically, each track on the record is designed to take you through descending floors of Rees’s mind each becoming more horrific than the last with the Skinwalker at the final floor, representing his inner fears, self-sabotage, hatred, and self-doubt. It’s a deeply intimate record of self-analysis and personal growth told through heavy fuzz-drenched guitars, a crushing rhythm section, and fevered vocals.

The band still carry that same the fast-paced energy and subtle trademark ‘70s references from their earlier releases though, and this is particularly evident on the danceable, indie-funk inflected new single “National Rust”, which was premiered last night by Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Speaking on the single Rees says, “‘National Rust’ was my attempt at consolidating my 2020 obsession with Sly and the Family Stone with my 2021 obsession with David Bowie’s album ‘Low’. It was the first song that really paved the way for the new album, it broke a lot of the sonic boundaries that I was writing within when starting the second album, “I AM NOT AFRAID OF PLAYING FUNKY GUITAR!”, I exclaimed, mu-tron in hand.

Lyrically, it made a statement that informed my songwriting moving forward as well, being a flagrant rejection of my previous political song writing, and an admission of alienation amongst a plethora of information. ‘National Rust’ acts as a bridge between my younger, more political perspective, and my more recent, more apathetic one.”

Elsewhere on the record, the harmony-filled “In My Egg” sees Rees sing about the struggles to force yourself out of your comfort zone, whilst “Human Compression” see the band delve into an almost desert-rock sound with hazy, unrelenting guitar work supporting Rees’s lyrics about the pressure he puts on himself. The psychedelic glam-tinged “Night Of The Skinwalker” – a song which centres around his struggles with self-doubt- marks the albums opus, melding a number of styles and genres across almost six minutes.

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard – Rees, guitarist Zac White, drummer Ethan Hurst and Rees’ brother and bassist Eddie – have been going from strength-to-strength since releasing their debut EP “The Non-Stop” in 2020. They’ve since made of end-of-year lists with NME, DIY, and Dork; earned plaudits from the likes of the Guardian, The Telegraph, MOJO, Uncut, Record Collector, The Needle Drop, The Independent, CLASH, The Line Of Best Fit, and So Young; and have amassed significant radio support with plays across worldwide radio, and live session appearances across BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, NPR, Radio X, and more.

The band’s frenetic live sets have seen the band make fans in tourmates from The Magic Gang to Miles Kane and were set to support Noel Gallagher – another in a growing list of fans – at the Royal Albert Hall before the coronavirus struck. They’ve also performed widely across the festival circuit appearing at Glastonbury, Eurosonic, Latitude, All Points East, SXSW, and Green Man, and have toured extensively including a packed-out headline date at Scala. The band will go out on tour again next March hitting 16-dates across the UK where the band will continue to debut new material.

EXCESSIVE FORCE – ‘Live Life For Idiots’ (Riot Records)  Hardcore as fuck.  Old school Agnostic Front style hardcore from down under.  To claim it is one of the more mellow songs on the album (soon to be released) it’s an ode to those fools blinded by bull*hit. The Dirty Denims – ‘Rock and Roll All Night / Better Believe It’ (Action Rock Jukebox 45 single)(Screaming Crow Records)  A perfectly passable cover of the Kiss Klassic from The Dirty Denims.  Their original submission is an uptempo rocker ‘Better Believe It’. 

 Each band has submitted a rockin’ version of a song that would have been found on your local jukebox in the 70s & 80s backed with an original track from the band. These large-holed 45s are perfect for that old jukebox in your basement. Each single comes with a jukebox title card and a custom 45 adapter in case you don’t have one of those cool old jukeboxes. Black Sheriff – ‘Centerfold / Johnny’s Fight’ (Action Rock Jukebox 45 single)(Screaming Crow Records) A stone cold pop rock classic gets the Sheriff treatment and in fairness its gonna be tough to beat the original but points are awarded for daring to go there and in truth pulling off a pretty impressive take on ‘Centrefold’.  

 

The band sounds more comfortable on their own turf kicking up a shitstorm with ‘Johnny’s Fight’. With a rumbling bassline that heads into a gang-filled chorus that’ll have the boys and girls windmilling and pogoing.

Twiggy Branches – ‘The Radiant Twist.’ (Self Release) Recorded live in the studio by Paul Kostabi (also did cover art) and is mixed by Grammy winner Carl Glanville (U2). Autogramm – ‘I Am A Situation’ (Nevado Records)  Infectious power-popin post-punk rock from Autogramm as they synth n slide into your noggin via this earworm.  Coming on like an 80s rock band who fell in love with post Tubeway Army Numan and just discovered Kraftwerk.  Splendid stuff ya? The black and white video portrays a Kraftwerk-like, day in the life of actress Kim Kraczon in mid-pandemic Berlin. The video echoes the sentiment of the song’s despondent lyrics. Little Triggers – ‘YEH MAN’   (ingrooves)  With influences stretching from Humble Pie and the MC5 to The Hives, Wolfmother and QOTSA. Tom Hamilton (lead vocals & guitars) and Jay Radcliffe (drums & backing vocals) make one hell of a din for a duo.  ‘Yeah Man’  is a thumping headache the morning after with a chaotic claustrophobic sound that gets exciting after the brain fog clears.  From the rasping vocals to the distorted bass and thrashing guitars.  Very exciting times for the Liverpool-based pair.  Check em out here

The Bloodshots – ‘No Way Out’ (Golden Robot Records). What time is it?  It’s cock Rock O’Clock kids.  Big chorus’s big guitars Big drums and big attitude. Who said cock rock was dead? Well, it ain’t, The Bloodshots are proving that.  Gang Vocals big enough for Two Dokken albums and guitar soloing like there’s no tomorrow. Check it out, kids.  I’m only disappointed they haven’t all got cowboy boots on and big hair I feel somewhat let down.  Never mind turn it up and lets rock. Sharing the stage with the likes of Danko Jones can only be a good thing as the band evolves.

The Cavemen – ‘Euthanise Me’ (Slovenly Recordings) Oh baby it’s always a good day when an email drops from Slovenly and it contains the words The Cavemen and you can see it contains new music.  Damn, I love this band of reprobates.  They play perfect trash and bash rock and Roll and ‘Euthanise Me’ is a four-track EP that just nails it. From the sonic explosion of the title track and all its trashy sing along beauty.  If that wasn’t trashy enough then get a load of the raw delights that is ‘Eat Your Heart & Wear Your Face’.  As close as you can get to ‘Raw Power’  without melting in the heat generated. They’ve also got time to give you a ‘Nightmare’ as they OD on the 50s Rock and Roll.  Hang on a minute, ‘Over You’ is a slower groove and an absolute peach of a track with a banging melody. and those guitars are like you’ve just wiped your ears with an angle grinder.  Brilliant!  Single of the week? Bitch Queens / Delilahs ’77 – Split (Lux Noise Records) Boom! Bitch Queens have been a band I’ve loved since I very first heard them and over those years they’ve managed to get better and better with each new record and live they are one of the best hard rockin bands out there. This split is yet more proof that they just kick ass and take no prisoners. A classic attack and takedown of a classic tune.  Bitch Queens absolutely own it – brilliant!

For all you collectors out there its available in several highly collectable colours. As for Delilahs, it’s a Misfits mashup and to be quite honest the ‘fits haven’t sounded this good for – oh God I don’t know how long – fantastic version. The classic ‘Some Kinda Hate’ is totally owned.  These two have form for sharing splits and this is a worthy addition to anyone’s punk rock 7′ collection.  Of course I’m saying Buy It! Here

The Hangmen – ‘Thunderhead / She Walks’ (Acetate Records)  It’s not every day you get a treat like this.  The Hangmen covering Gun Club – wow!  What a storming take on the Jefferey Lee Pierce Gun Club number. Blood and thunder with the slippy slide guitar and crash bang wallop its a really good take on a great song. Small talks about his love of Gun Club and pours his heart out in this cover.

As for she walks its got swagger and some awesome ivory tinkling going on, Hell it’s The Hangmen just go get it!

Jesse Malin – ‘Ameri’Ka’ (Wicked Cool Records) Laid back Malin knocks out the best single he’s penned in a while. Troubadour or bard of NYC its got great lyrics and in the darkness there seems a hope and a look to the future going on.  Tough times call for tough songs and this is a beauty.  But then I’m always going to say that sure I’d love to hear the guy rock out but I also love the guys more roots American vibe and this is the latter – and very good it is too.

Vacuum – ‘Fixated’ (Wanda Records) Some usual suspects from the London Punk Scene drop a two-track slice of toxic punk rock with a heap of melody and a chorus you can jump around to and sing along at the same time. Uh, Ha Fixated alright.

The B side is like the sound of some punk keying your car door then kicking your speaker cone in.  It’s snotty it’s brash its an open wound you just want to scratch and I love the breakdown and solo.

The Dirts – ‘#2’ (Self Release) Five songs in under ten minutes, what’s not to like? No-fi, Tick.  The spirit of The Stooges and the Damned coursing through this is just about perfect.  Where do I pay my money? opener ‘Zero Boys’ is trashy as fuck but ‘Inside My Head’ takes it to the next level.  The vocals are barely audible but the guitar is throwing out the licks life his life depends on it.

Recorded at home (if your home is a cell with no windows then cool! and Helvete which is just about right.  Satans doorbell would be the ideal place to hang this one. This EP absolutely rips and only gets better.  ‘Nowhere To Go’ is bursting with energy but ‘Homicide Eyes’ is plain Evil.  Get some at the link pop pickers its a Garage punk fire fest and I love it.

Drive-By Truckers – ‘The New OK’ ( ATO Records) Patterson Hood pens the hard-hitting title track from the new Truckers album and shoots a video during the recent Portland unrest.  Hood is residing in the Portland area and asks the question is the New OK OK? and hits the spot.  Always astute lyrics but these strike a chord with so many right-minded people around the world and we stand side by side.  Everyone should have the right to peacefully protest and everyone should respect that and Hood shoots a hard-hitting video to accompany the track. Top tune from a top band check it out.

The False Positives – ‘Favourite Things’ (self Release)  When the sleeve has albums strewn over a floor and I spy such classics as The Damneds debut, Motorhead, DMZ, Nick Lowe and The Flamin Groovies I just knew this was going to be a winner and low and behold it is.  A vibrant Rockin’ slab of Power poppin goodness. Two and a half minutes of Swirling Garage organs and tasty distorted licks with a solid chorus and do wap harmonies to complete the job and a lead vocal that reminds me of the late great Nikki Sudden.  Very nice work indeed.

Continental Lovers – ‘Out Of My Head’ (Self Release) Glam bang Thank you, man. Trashy Rock ‘n’ Roll with a delightful smudge of glitter and attitude.

The shuffle on the verse leading to the chorus is great and the arrangement is quality.  It’s a rapid burst of energy and quite possibly the best thing Joe has penned to date be it as a Breakdown or any other project he’s been involved in.  It’s a top tune and if this is just a taste of what’s to come then bring it on as Continental Lovers have a bright future.  Buy ‘Out Of My Head’ Here

Baby Shakes – ‘Singles’ (Dimple Discs)  Glam stomping Rock ‘n’ Retro Roll.  Two Undertones-related records get the Noo Yawk makeover and to be fair they turn in a pretty faultless pair of beauties. ‘Sweet N Sour’ is a stomper that was originally released by Damian O’Neill on his solo record a few years back but my pick of the pair is ‘Really Really’ a song written by drummer Billy Doherty that could be found on the B side of the 1979 hit ‘Get Over You’ which they absolutely nail.

Bipolar – ‘Bipolar EP’ (Slovenly Recordings)  Thinking about how to describe Bipolar whilst the EP is playing then gancing down at the press release and seeing them described as SCREAMERS finger-banging THE DICKIES while THE SPITS egg them on I knew I couldn’t beat that so I’m using it. Bipolar is the twisted creation of Pouya and Obash, two Iranians living in Brooklyn.

Of course its crude, Lo-Fi noisy and hell of a lot of fun.  ‘Virus’ sounds like a twisted punk rock Motorhead on the wrong meds.  As for ‘Fist Fight’ it sounds like what went on before during and after they pressed record. Its uncomplicated, dark punk rock blasts from people who truly get it.  Go find em if you dare.  Top EP. 

 

 

Jakob Mind – ‘Watch The City Burn’ (Lövely Records) Rotten Mind singer/vocalist Jakob Arvidsson’s newly established solo project unveils the first track and its the sprightly ‘Watch The City Burn’ and bloody good it is too. It’s the first glimpse of what will be a new album early 2021 and Jakob promises songs from straight-up punk rock to a more Roky Erickson vibe so what’s not to like there? ‘Watch The City Burn’ sounds like he plays everything and a bit DIY but in the best possible way.  Great song, great vibe and one to look out for.  Pencil it in your diaries folks April 2021.   Facebook / Instagram

I See Vultures – ‘Neversafe’ (Self Release)  Something of a Gallows tip or post-punk hardcore – a little less in your face maybe but coming from the same place are these Brit hooligans I see Vultures. drawing from the At The Drive-In, Rage Against The Machine pool. Its Big vocals full of harmony that’s quite proggy sounding against the rough lead vocal but swirling guitars is the name of the game before they build up into that Rage groove.  It’s glossy and rough in equal measures.  Check them out for yourself in the youtube video below.

Atomic Eater – ‘Broken Earth’ (Self Release) Another off the Lo-Fi conveyor belt.  Swedens Atomic Eater goes for the electronic garage punk with a Bontempi keyboard to lead you into the dense verse /chorus thump. Imagine if the early Buzzcocks used synths and riffed on Tubeway Army vibes then you’d be in the right ballpark. ‘Nightshift’ is another uptempo punch to the throat and one you’ll be toe-tapping along to but pick it up quickly because it’s over with in the blink of an eye.  Crazy scandi punks.

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard – 30,000 Megabucks (Self Release)   Riff it up boyos Its like a prime time slab of boogie-woogie on the intro like Angus was born in Brecon.  It’s a double denim stomp off.  When times are tough and you’re looking for a little ray of sunshine in strut four lads with electric guitars and a pocket full of top tunes. Get on it now my 70s inspired rock and rollas turn the amps up and play your rock and roll.  This tune is majestic like the band riding over the rainbow throwing out fistfuls of magic stardust that cheer up the people via the medium of rock, I didn’t know it was possible to smile like a Cheshire cat for three and a half minutes but I do now – Buy It!

I was quite excited to go and see Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard live in my home town back in April but then the world decided to go tits up and the show never took place.  There is however a bill poster at the venue that I plan to liberate when all these baddie germs finally fuck off.

Now, after being tipped off by friend and colleague Mr. H Bomb Hayward that there was a new band in town and they played Rock and Roll and weren’t afraid to wear double denim. Then hearing the first couple of tunes I and seeing them strut their stuff on TV I was rather looking forward to the live experience having already paid upfront for my album pre-sale and finally mid pandemic it duly arrived.

Now, first things first.  When the packet was left on the doorstep by my friendly Royal Mail person he duly backed off.  Now, was this a sign? was he just pandemic virus fearful and following guidelines? or who knows, maybe, he knew what was lurking inside the 12″ x 12″ cardboard mailbox. I have to say dai yawn diolch, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, for daring to run with such a confident album cover.  I just hope it was done with a straight face and there was no giggling taking place.  Boy, its a statement album cover if ever there was one I’ll give you that.  Like Jaggers crotch with the zipper or Lords Of The New Church and their ‘Like A Virgin’ picture sleeve, this bad boy is right up there.

Anyway enough shenanigans what are the fucking tunes like? I mean, they could have gone with a Dwarves cover or a pose of Ian Botham proportions but if they didn’t have the chops to back it up they were going to look a little daft mun as they say around these parts.

Fear not my Rock and Roll comrades for as soon ‘Double Denim Hop’ is counted in the confidence of the sleeve is instantly matched with a ’70s Bolan Boogie-woogie, glam rock stomper, to rival any of the pretenders to the retro crown. For on this evidence alone, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard (so good they named them thrice) have it sewn up as they stomp and Rock right out the door and back again. The dueling solos and the chorus is so spot on its one of those earworms you simply can’t shake out of your head for days. What an opener.

This ten-track behemoth has got it all.  They are like a little band of magpies as they nick a riff from over there off that Kinks record and they were clearly paying attention to the Bolan Boogie.  I’d wager they have more than a passing hankering for a small faces record or two. To be fair for the first few tracks they just Take Care Of Business and kick out the jams.

They even entertain with the slight interlude of audio widescreen panoramic views entitled ‘Theme From Early Morning’.   Before chilling out with the acoustic ‘Long Day/Free Day’ with its simple arrangement and sparse vocal that grows and grows but never goes too far.

They head off into “we’ve joined a cult” tune with the breezy ‘John Lennon Is My Jesus Christ’ as they tip their hat to the people who clearly inspired them to pick up their instruments and play. Penultimately they head off into a sixty second Fleetwood Mac noodle but sound like they lost interest as well. This only leaves the ‘Sugarloaf Mountain Crucify Me’ when they set a foot into Neil Young territory, briefly, Which is cool even if it does take almost four minutes to raise its pulse.

In the main, this is a breath of fresh air, the sound of a band enjoying making music and playing with passion, heart and a cheeky grin.  Just get a copy and turn it up mun – Right up!

Even a pandemic has a silver lining if you look hard enough and during this lockdown period there has been some really good Rock and Roll records released and today we’d like to bring you some that have come out recently.

Before I write another word, you might have noticed (if your from the local area) I’m a headliner missing, no Henry’s Funeral Shoe who were said headliner, yours truly made the conscious decision to abstain, having already seen them any number of times, what drew me tonight were the opening two bands.

Openers Dead Shed Jokers have to me released the LP of the year in All the Seasons, produced by ex Tortoise Corpse’s Tim Hamill in his studio down in far West Wales, which you can pick up on Band camp (Sadly the Corpse have long since necrosed, but if you fancy listening to some absolutely stunning technical thrash, dig deep into the metal graveyard), in fact its not just me who’s been raving about this release, I think every mag that’s reviewed it has been stunned by how good a record it is, and I hope this is the one that drags them kicking and screaming out of the underground, I mean its even trending as I write in HMV in Cardiff.

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, I had heard nothing but good things about live. And coming off the back of a tour slot with Miles Kane, recent Radio 1 coverage and a feature in NME, these are another Welsh band going places, shows how vibrant and diverse Welsh music is at present.

Opening to a more than half full priory the Dead Shed Jokers proceeded to tear the place a new one, no compromise and with only playing songs from the new LP, the band absolutely nailed it. Live the music takes on a whole new dimension, it’s complexities driving rather than slowing things down, when you watch the band, influences flick through your mind but ultimately what you are listening to is so unique the influences pale into insignificance, this is 100% original and I love the refusal to bend or re-shape the sound for the mass market.
Now I have to say after reviewing All the seasons I didn’t realize how much of a monster Dreams of North Korea was going to be live, you could have picked my jaw up off the floor. The only shame about tonight’s performance was it was too short!! Fact!

Now talk about rock music on the other end of the spectrum, as Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard kicked in their set I found myself transported back to the ’70s, frontman Tom very definitely channelling his inner Bowie drawing down early days Jagger when preening was par for the course, and recalling classic Glitter band, Bolan, Wizzard et al. And for the whole duration of the set, the band got tighter and tighter with the crowd expanding more and more, dancing and smiling taking over en masse with tracks like Late night city, Love forever and double denim hop, bringing the stomps.

Two bands, one pushing a totally new direction for rock music, the other caught on the revivalist train each relevant now and today, showing how strong rock music in Wales currently is, it doesn’t get much better for a Saturday nites entertainment.
