Finally this Monday we bring you the brand new video from Dinosaur Pile-Up and their take of the classic ‘It’s tricky’ from Run DMC.  The band have announced rescheduled live dates, which include their largest headline show yet to take place at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town on February 26th 2021, with a warm up show at The Wardrobe, Leeds on February 20th. Dinosaur Pile-Up will be completing a full UK tour with Enter Shikari throughout May and June 2021, which finishes with a London show at Alexandra Palace on June 12th. Reel Big Fish and The Aquabats! are about to hit the road together again! They just couldn’t be without each other in 2020! The tour begins on May 29th!

Reel Big Fish frontman Aaron Barrett: “Nothing brings me more joy than seeing the Aquabats live in concert…except maybe going on tour with them and seeing them live EVERY night!!! So happy to be still playing shows with these guys after all these years and so excited to celebrate 25 years of friendship, wackiness and ska!”

As one of the key mid-90’s ska-punk bands to emerge out of Southern California’s third wave ska scene, along with acts like No Doubt and Sublime, Reel Big Fish’s popularity hasn’t faltered over the years. Distinguished by their hyperkinetic stage shows, sarcastic humor ironic covers of new wave pop songs, and metallic shards of ska, the group continues to tour the world playing shows to a hardcore fanbase that’s as devoted as ever. The band’s 9th studio LP, ‘Life Sucks…Let’s Dance’ was released in late 2018 and has earned some of the best reviews of their lengthy career.

Punk rock’s superheroes, The Aquabats!, formed in 1994 in Orange County as a way to have some harmless fun in a music scene that took itself too seriously. Their Paul Frank designed “power belts,” trademark rash guards, black eye masks, and “anti-negativity” helmets and onstage antics quickly caught on, earning the group a fierce loyal following that spans generations.

Kooky Spooky…in Stereo! is The Aquabats! 6th studio album. The first since 2011’s High Five Soup! This energetic, eclectic album is prime Aquabats with all of the variety, quirk, and fist-pumping rock you can handle! Walk on the weird side with songs like “Skeleton Inside!” Crazy characters, maximum repeat listening, and yes, even horns…it’s all there!

American Television – ‘Watch It Burn’ (Wiretap Records)

American Television – ‘Watch It Burn’ (Wiretap Records)

American Television are a punk rock band outta DC.  They play fast and are a throwback to the kind of punk that swamped MTV back in the day. At times they remind me of the likes of Anti Flag, Bad Religion and of course Green Day.  This is their debut album and for the Genre their hitting outta they do it really well. The band themselves say that its an album of ten tracks of pop melodies with a punk rock attitude and that’s a fair assessment of what ‘Watch It Burn’ is all about.  There is an air of being uplifted by the songs and that’s always a good thing, right? Like their genre compadres Anti Flag they feel that the “Man” is crushing the man and money and greed is taking over above the greater good and I like that and you can hear it in their lyrics.  Bands like American Television offer hope and are eternal optimists and that’s always cool.

 

I particularly love the bass thud of ‘Drinks’ – married with the thunderous riff its the standout song. Close on its heels is ‘Dad’s Song’ which is probably reflected right around the globe currently. to be fair when you dig into the album the guts of the tracklist is really strong and songs pop out the more you play it. ‘Technology’ is grabbing me at the moment followed by the harder-edged ‘Wasteland, USA’ with its sub-two minutes heads down and hit it hard attitude.

Something of a call to arms for all the disenfranchised and misfits out there ‘Misprint’ is autobiographical and something many punks can relate to and it’s wrapped up in a good tune and they reference Greg from Bad Religion to boot.  If you’re waiting for the slow heartfelt set-ender then forget it.  these guys light the torch and carry it on ‘Great Divide’ reminding me of the Downtown Struts and that’s always a cool sound.  Check it out I really liked it and can only see it growing on me even more.

When does a genre of music become overground?  How many records do you need to sell to stop being underground?  All questions plenty of genres deal with day in day out and year in year out.  From the origins of Ska to today there have always been plenty of bands skanking it out.  Politics or just goofy misfits acting out Ska covered it all.

‘Pick It Up! Ska In The 90s’ just about covers a whole scene with the movers and shakers playing their part and covering the story in detail.  A thoroughly enjoyable movie that gives the back story and takes on all comers using the people who were in the trenches from Tim Armstrong narrating to No Doubt being included along side the big players from The Specials to Operation Ivy to Reel Big Fish and Blink 182 right up to today’s players like Aimee Interrupter.

Focusing on the 90s explosion this film is a great two hours of musical education thats a comprehensive coverage.  Regardless of if you like or love or can’t get into it at all its a really engaging flick. I particularly like how fondly and honestly the main players talk about the scene.  When it went from the top of the scene right back down to going underground its a great story and the flow is really good.

As far as music films go its watchable and informative cramming a hell of a lot of detail into just over an hour and a half its great to see the likes of Roddy Radiator getting screen time to tell his story alongside how No Doubt broke out they give props to the likes of Operation Ivy through to Rancid and their contribution.  who knew Goldfinger played 385 shows in a single year! Amazing stuff.

Someone describes it as like a pendulum swing and I like that because its spot on from grunge to ska punk to nu metal back to rock to indie and back round again.  the endurance of some of the bands like The Slackers and Rancid has no doubt helped bands like The Interrupters and Bar Stool Preachers who are coming through and will be the next generation to challenge the BossTones and thats cool and as it should be and to see The Specials and Neville Staples filling halls in 2019 is awesome.

Check this film out its like a ray of sunshine in dark times and the soundtrack is really really good. Put on your pork pie hat and get skanking you know you want to.
