RPM was contacted by Razorbats as they had a brand new video and single hitting the streets and asked if we’d like to launch the video.  Of course, when they asked the only questions we had was when can we have it and how can we help you? Our favourite Norweigan band has released ‘The City’ via digital platforms and as a split 7″ with The Sick Things from Canada –  it’ll come out via Gods Candy in North America and the bands Norweigan label Rob Mules Records in Europe. UK fans can expect Glunk Records to carry copies as soon as they become available. As Well as reviewing the single in the 45 rpm round up here’s yesterday we can now exclusively reveal the video…  Fanfare please.  Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you the excellent Razorbats and their brand new video for ‘The City’

 

From April through June the band will tour in support of the release, with a bunch of club gigs and festivals including the Call of the Wild festival in England with The Wildhearts/The Virginmarys/Hardcore Superstar and Odal Rockfestival with The Dead Boys/Nashville Pussy/Sator.

As a lover of all things punk’n’roll I couldn’t wait to listen to the brand new album from Swedish band “Demons”.

“Demons” are built around the songwriting genius of Mathias *Hep Cat Matt* Carlsson guitars/vocals and have been around for over 20 years and have never released anything short of quality music.

New album “Kiss Off” not only carries on with the quality stakes but in my opinion is “Demons” best album and also a contender for the title of album of the year.

The album kicks off with the track “Baphomet Briefs” and the listener is instantly caught with a great guitar riff, driving bass and crashing drums. Mathias’s vocals are spot on and the song is an instant earworm.

To follow up such a great opener is no easy job but “Mojo Rojo” a song the band has been keen to promote prior to this being released to give people a taster of what’s to come will give you the answer and its a positive, of course they can follow it by just writing another great tune. It’s another fast-paced track which hooks the listener in even more to what’s promising to be such a strong album.

“Bad Neighbourhood” has a slightly punkier edge with a great chanting chorus. This was released as a single so should be familiar with many. “Kids are gonna cry” starts off at a slightly slower pace but soon picks up speed and has a killer guitar solo in the middle of what can only be described as anthemic or maybe triumphant as we can all throw our fist in the air behind that chorus.

“Standing in for joy” sounds like a band that loves what it does as does “Hold sway” follows and these two tracks keep the album flowing at such high quality the addition of a swirling organ layered in the background is a great addition.

“Street corner of no return” is a great sing-along track which gets in the listener’s brain upon first listen. From the rumbling bass through the drum roll that drives the song on it has touches of old school punk rock n roll in it’s Slade like verses that lead towards the hook on the chorus -great stuff.

As the album sails gloriously into the second half ‘Hemisexual’ has some neat 12-bar and those gang vocals!  Mean Street Beat’ begins with a really crisp riff and you have to love the keyboards running with the melody into the chorus “Demons” have really hit the jackpot with this one.

“Blackhearted pearl of a girl” is another top-notch chunk of punk’n’roll – A  tune which picks up the pace as the track progresses and builds and builds.

“Keep on doing it wrong ( ‘til you’re getting it right)” closes out this great album on another high. It’s a great foot stomper which gets you humming along and goes out with a clap of thunderous Rock n Roll rather than a whimper or throwing in a slow ballad they go out as they came in.

It’s hard to put into words how great this album really is as it is quality from start to finish, and every tune on here is a sure-fire winner. Even after the first play, there is a feeling that something really cool is happening and you’ve just heard a most excellent record. Make no mistake about that.

Thanks “Demons” for such a great album. I can’t write anymore as I’m off to play this bad boy again and again and again.

Anybody Wanna Skate, originally it started off life as a 7-inch project but the songs were just too good to hold back on……….

Opener and title track, Anybody Wanna Skate has a great Rocket From the Crypt vibe to it. The hooks are there and the production is perfect, what’s not to like?

Straight into Dead Boys territory with Sick of Feeling Sick, then off to Ramonesville with Sticks and Stones. Barely five minutes in and a quarter of the album gone and I’m already thinking “contender for album of the year.”

Blundertoe is a fine slice of instrumental surf rock, while Gift of Desperation flings you back into the warm and welcoming arms of Johnny Thunders and Dead Boys. With their stall set out, TMNT has another great Ramones feel to it, while 70’s Too Young for Lemmy to Die is another stripped down Rocket From the Crypt stomper, complete with gang vocals and a key change.

‘Anybody Wanna Skate’ is like a selection box of all my favourite bands blended together into the perfect mega-rock-monster. It’s just fucking great!

It’s Fashionable is a bit of a Clash City Rocker, while It’s a Shame reeks of Stiv and Trying to Kill Me is the bastard son of Dee Dee and Cheetah Chrome.

Surfin’ Swami takes us back to the beach in fine surf rock style and builds us right up to the final banger, ZOEY, rounding the album of in fine fast and frantic style.

Anybody Wanna Skate is not only a fine album but it’s also a thing of beauty. It’s available in classic black, limited Red Yellow Black Slash Splatter and Clear with Blue Black and Green Glow in The Dark Splatter; all wrapped up in eye scrambling artwork by Riccardo Bucchioni.

Some bands are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them. Anybody Wanna Skate is the dog’s bollocks…. ave it !!!

With the vinyl away at the pressing plant and the CD’s in hand it’s looking like mid/late Feb for this much anticipated new release from Shit Islands leading noise makers brand new album ‘Stand For Nothing’  to hit the shops.

He Who Cannot Be Named – The Good the Bad and the Brutal (God’s Candy Records)

Do you love The Dwarves? Do you love punk rock? The people at God’s Candy Records do and so should you.

He Who’s back, balls out and rocking with album number four, “The Good, The Bad, and The Brutal” and guess what – half the tunes have “good” in the title and the other half have “bad” in the title…… and they’re all great!!!

Masks on, balls out, let’s go.

Side one kicks off in sick-as-fuck pop-punk style with “A Good Problem” and “Bad Day”. Maybe my favourite two tracks on offer here and both about being pissed off! In fact my 9-year-old has had “Bad Day” on repeat for the last couple of weeks. Target audience bull’s eye!

You know what to expect from the slab of plastic and you get exactly what you need to make your life that little bit better for at least 30 minutes anyway. Not a million miles away from Blag and the mothership and not too far from the likes of NOFX and the gang.

Trundling along merrily, there’s not a stinker in the pack; all twelve tunes are as hooky as fuck. “Bad Means Good” is another stand out punky-poppy workout, while  “Good Guys Of the Wild West” launches you into a Spaghetti Western barn dance bounce-along, proving that punk rock needs more “Yippee-ki-yays”.

‘Bad Decisions” has the sound of an extra fucked up Tom Waits, while “Good Gestapo” makes you chuckle. No ones is trying to re-invent the wheel here. Let’s face it, HeWho’s been writing and playing punk rock for almost 30 years with the Dwarves – subtle he is not!

Yup its wet as outside and most people are heading out the door to earn a crust to buy more records and go to more gigs – well the sensible ones are so we have  a couple of new tunes to help you on your way into the big wide world this Monday morning.

To finish off this weeks offerings we reviewed these Canadians this past week and think they deserve to reach a much wider audience and as you splash through the puddles to work why not have some great rock n roll ringing in your ears.

Montreal, QC-based rock band Sick Things recently released a video for their single, ‘Sick Things’ which coincidentally is the name of the band and the album and the single so even the dumbest Rock and Rolla can remember that can’t they?  sure they can (it worked for me) and if they tune in they are sure in for a treat.  Released earlier this summer on CD this is about to get a spanking new release on wax from the good people at Gods Candy Record and on hearing this for the first time I had to congratulate the label for its good choice yet again.

 

You see the more you dig into to new music hitting the office desk (so to speak) the more patterns seem to appear and right here right now Canada is winning any race for the best straight up power pop rock n roll bands currently releasing music anywhere on the planet.  Damn, there must be something in the water right now because every time I turn on the stereo and play a Canadian band they are killing me with the tunes and Sick Things are no exception and the latest release to hit the death decks that get a toe tap and nod of approval from RPM HQ.

‘Take The Head From The Crown’ doesn’t hang about and goes straight for the kill with a foot stomper as the guitars wail and the floorboards shake this is happening, folks.  Cutting its teeth on 70’s classics like early Kiss, Cheap Trick and a healthy dose of duelling Thin Lizzy like guitars there isn’t much time to shoot the breeze and waffle because drum roll after soaring solo this is good stuff.  Before you have time to wipe the dribble of your chin ‘Boogalooser’ is shaking its backside like the finest show off wanna be guitar slinger in town this is how Biters started I’m sure of it.

It doesn’t stop there – this is no flash in the pan because if anything this record is getting stronger if anything by the time we reach ‘I Got News For You’ the riffs are getting sharper and we’re burning rubber towards Hellacopters territory maybe with a little less attitude but in the same ballpark.  Thank fuck the acoustic guitars come out for ‘We Got It Figured Out’ but only briefly were in for a classic acoustic layered rocker and who doesn’t love those BV’s?

This record is really consistent from start to finish and its quality is relentless I just hope they windmilled their way through the recordings and drank plenty of beer and are living the dream because the likes of Lynott opened up this path for others to follow and whilst the trail is still there we need bands to earn their stripes and pass through the door marked Stage ahead because the bright lights are shining and those electric guitars won’t duel themselves.

It’s got the energy and swing of that debut Black Crowes album and the attitude of prime Thin Lizzy with the melody of Cheap Trick and they even remembered the cowbell – what’s not to like for fuck’s sake this record is as much fun as is legally possible and I’m thinking you should go get some.  Eleven slices of prime good time with extra slices of solo on top – buy it!
