I always love getting emails from Pirates Press about the new records coming our way, and a band who visit the UK regularly, as well as releasing most excellent albums, is The Drowns. ‘Harsh Reality’ is the new full-length album from Seattle’s The Drowns, produced by punk rock legend Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag) and mixed & mastered by Jason Livermore. Surely that’s enough to perk up the interest in this album.

Seeing as we’re only here for a good time and not a long time, The Drowns dish up the perfect soundtrack of honest, good tunes that are well produced and given the perfect amount of time to craft the solos and breaks. It’s not by accident these things happen; it’s a skill you can try long and hard to perfect or, like the Drowns,, you just have it in your DNA.

I saw a quote that The Drown have captured lightning in a bottle, and that’s exactly what they’ve done. Sure, they’ve been around long enough to modify their craft, but the tunes are right on the money, delivering song after song and sounding as good as ever, and if anything, on the first few plays might have just created a career best, which is no easy task.

There are chest beating sing from the rooftop tunes from start to finish, as they race out of the gates with the opening shots of ‘Always A Bastard’ having a razor-sharp edge to it; it’s got attitude and packs a punch. As the album meanders from track to track with familiar styles, when they hit the Living End sort of melody, they really hit cruise control with ‘Hellish Tattoo’ they seem really comfortable and excel at this kinda song. ‘Let’s Start A Cult’ delivers a thumping rhythm, and it’s a strength that they haven’t smoothed off the rough edges of their delivery because that’s a real high for me with the fist-pumping anthems; it’s all good and has teeth. ‘3rd & Pike’ mixes it up with a great arrangement, and it’s easy to see why they chose it for a single.

I’m sure the best place to hear these songs will be in a packed club where everyone is singing out loud and smiling because that’s what The Drowns have in their armoury: top tunes, great live and a sense of community running through the songs like ‘Burn The Page’ and the rockin ‘Vengence’.

Thirteen songs make for awesome value as well, right from the needle drop to the closing banger that is ‘No Better ‘. The Drowns ‘Harsh Reality’ is a winner, no doubt about it. You should head off to your local indie store and request they get a copy of this record in your hands asap you won’t regret it. Buy It!
